We'll update this report this evening with the latest for the weekend.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 22nd February 2008, 8:37am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a very nice day on the slopes. Yamabiko was especially good, as it stayed relatively cold up there for most of the day. There was shin deep powder to enjoy in the trees and perfect visibility to do it in. It was cloudy in the morning but then beautiful blue skies all day. The downside of this was that it became very warm throughout the day. This was especially noticeable from the Yamabiko station of the Nagasaka gondola on down. Today will be quite icy.

There is another low pressure system pointing itself at the north island, which is forecast to bring snow and cold temperatures from tomorrow through to next week.    Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 22nd February 2008, 8:59am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a fine day and today looks like it is going to me more of the same. The sun is out, there are blue skies all around and sunglasses are needed. Very bright!

It also feels slightly less cold as well this morning and the temperatures recorded at a few of the resorts reflect that as well. Okushiga Kogen is posting -5 degrees this morning. It will probably rise to quite mild temperatures during the day today.

Tomorrow looks set to be colder once again with a sunny start to the day forecast and then a chance of snow later on and into Sunday.

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 22nd February 2008, 9:11am
Weather conditions: Blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the snow fell until midday bringing around 35 cm in total to the valley. The sun shone all afternoon and temperatures rose, melting much of the fresh snow and settling the snow pack in general.

This morning is a another blue sky day with some very cold temperatures before the sun came out (-12) but things are slowly warming up. (currently -3)

Tomorrow morning the sun is expected to shine but the clouds and snow are forecast to roll in around noon and continue through to the midday Sunday.

Backcountry Advisory
Snow on South faces was heavy by mid morning with North faces starting to crust towards the afternoon. The evidence of many large recent avalanches (size 2-3) were obvious on the South face of Mt Tanigawa with debris filling the valley. Data collected from a pit on the North face (1300m) revealed that there is still a very weak layer below the new snow, as deep as 200cm in places (CTM 12@ 192cm SC). This layer could cause large avalanches, especially on steeper terrain. Caution is advised.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Considerable

Furano Now!

Friday 22nd February 2008, 9:24am
Weather conditions: overcast bright morning,
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Periods of snow throughout yesterday has bought an accumulated 5cm in the last 24 hours, but it’s not enough to have an effect on snow conditions on the mountain. The snowflakes were huge, light and fluffy just like January storms, and it looked very promising mid afternoon yesterday that an unexpected storm had brought fresh snow, but it didn’t last long.

The hard pack on the mountain continues. Temperatures are consistently below zero again, so there has been no more snow melt. Yesterday the mountain was very quiet. If the Self-Defence Force and the High School Camps weren't in town, then the mountain would have been almost empty.

Snow tonight and then strong winds tomorrow afternoon with more snowfall expected.

Niseko Now!

Friday 22nd February 2008, 9:51am
Weather conditions: Snowy with clouds.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday, skiing was a mixed bag of powder, groomed, sun, overcast, foggy and even a bit of wind. The runs bumped up early with the fresh snow. Riding outside the gates offered some deep powder in some places while other areas the fresh was tough going as it got heavy with more humid contidions that set in durirg the day. All lifts were open and there is plenty of snow.

We will have some furious weather over the next few days. A large continental high is about to collide with a deep pacific low, right over the top of Hokkaido. This should begin to happen overnight with the full brunt of the wind and snow hitting us tomorrow. Although the boundary of the two systems will pass by Sunday, we can expect further snow until the middle of next week. Unfortunately it looks like there will also be a good deal of wind associated with this weather pattern.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 22nd February 2008, 10:28am
Weather conditions: Blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another good morning in the Hakuba valley today with blue skies, light winds and cool temperatures and . Last nights full moon lit up the whole valley and the view of the mountains was impressive. This cool, clear night has made sure that the ice on the southern slopes stays icy and the soft snow on the northern slopes stays soft. The courses are hard pack groom on the southern runs and soft to medium pack groomed on the northern runs. The sun was hot yesterday and will be the same today so do wear a cap, sun glasses and put on some sun screen. Enjoy the great weather and fine views today. Expect the skies to cloud over Saturday morning and begin to snow through the weekend.

Backcountry Travel Advisory as at Feb 22th:

Strong winds yesterday have created thick wind slabs on South and South East aspects that may be unstable in steep convexing terrain. Continued solar radiation on East and South aspects will continue to melt the surface snow through the day and result in rapid settlement today and increased pressure on these recent wind slabs. Todays solar radiation will also create an even harder melt / freeze crust that will pose instability with the fore casted new snow over the week end. Take due care around exposed rocks and sparse trees on solar aspects and in steep lee slopes. The recent snow is very variable in depth due to the wind and solar radiation so be aware of this when entering into slopes and stay away from shallow snow on steep entrances in to chutes and open slopes.

Avalanche Danger Scale:

Below Tree Line: Low

Tree Line: Moderate

Alpine: Considerable

Naeba Now!

Friday 22nd February 2008, 13:25pm
Weather conditions: Clear & sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a stifling 4 degrees in the village today and looks set to warm up even more before it cools down.

The recent dumping of snow is being beaten back by the suns radiation.

The skies are blue, there is no wind and all is in the usual sunny day full swing mode over on the Naeba and Kagura hills.

Real spring like conditions today. Lovely.   Read more ...
