Myoko Now!

Friday 21st December 2007, 6:43am
Weather conditions: slight snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Slight Snows last night kept the levels stable with no changes right across the board. Scheduled to be cloudy today which should keep snow integrity stable as well. But tomorrow and the rest of the weekend may be sunny.

Because of this, I'd recommend either Seki Onsen or Akakura resorts for fluffier conditions, but by this weekend, even these resorts may say goodbye to what was, for the past few weeks, powder heaven.

Heads up with the forecasts.

120(Akakura Kanko);105cm (Akakura Onsen); 118cm at the top, 50cm bottom(Suginohara);117cm (Kumado); 72cm(Pine Valley); 167cm (Seki Onsen);45cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);28cm (Madarao Sympathique); 83cm (Madarao Kogen); 98cm (Cupid Valley); 118cm (Myoko Ski Park); 80cm (Togakushi)   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Friday 21st December 2007, 8:10am
Weather conditions: crisp morning. snow clearing to breaks of blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful sunset last night. If you had your camera out then I hope you could take a perfect postcard photo.

10cm of fresh snow overnight. More expected through till lunchtime.

This weekend we are expecting an increase of skiing guests to the mountain. The town is now prepared and most of the busineses are operational for the season.

The Tourist Association have released this year`s Dining and Entertainment Guide which lists lots of restaurants, activites and services for the town. This is a valuable resource for guests so make sure you pick one up when you arrive.

The schedule has also been released for Furano Cultural Exchange Events, beginning January 12th and running each Saturday night until March 1.

There are 2 other ski resorts nearby to Furano. Kamui and Tomamu have both opened for the season. Guests to Furano can ski Kamui as well on their minimum 5 day consecutive lift pass.

Tomamu has a base of 75cm, and yesterday was a big powder day town there. Kamui needs a little more snow to get its base for the season, and then the tree skiing will again be a big hit.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 21st December 2007, 8:19am
Weather conditions: Heavy snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More snow to report in Nozawa this morning. It started in the village at about 630 and snowed solidly for an hour covering the roads with about 5cm. It has started snowing again quite heavily now.

Yesterday was an absolute cracker of a day on the mountain. It snowed heavily all morning but after lunch it was a new day. There were blue skies and perfect visibility to enjoy the powder. Under the lifts it was knee deep and light.

The groomers are working overtime to get the lower slopes ready for opening day. The hayashi-kan cat track that takes you to the bottom of the Hikage Gondola is open and we had a little taste of snow on the lower slopes yesterday. The snow is considerably heavier down there but there is plenty of it. The forecast is for more snow this morning and then to clear with no new snow for two days. It should be a great opening day on Saturday.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Friday 21st December 2007, 8:21am
Weather conditions: overcast, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We had a beautiful morning on the mountain yesterday with several hours of sunshine and clear skies. A fresh cover of really light powder created the perfect conditions for riders of all levels.

The low pressure system that pushed the highs over us yesterday brought several periodic snowfalls with the heaviest arriving while night skiing was in full swing. The snowfalls eased off overnight and this morning the sun is warming things up a little in the village. The Hirafu website hasn't reported any gains in snow depth up high but last night, riders were enjoying heavy snowfalls.

The higher slopes will undoubtly be the best place to start the day.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 21st December 2007, 8:56am
Weather conditions: Cloud, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was some heavy rain overnight, but earlier on this morning that changed into snow and was sticking well - at least a few cm - until it stopped just a short while ago. But, it's just started snowing again! So it looks like we should have snow on and off for the day at town level as well as higher up on the mountains, so fingers crossed.

More resorts planning to open tomorrow including NASPA Ski Garden, Ipponsugi, Kayama Captain Coast and Yuzawa Nakazato. Snowfall today would certainly help them do that.

We'll post an update this evening with the latest....

---

PM update:

It was on and off snow all day - down here in the town mostly off as there was only a very light sprinkling of snow on top of the car this evening. A bit disappointing.

The snow has been falling more higher up though at Kagura and Naeba and the snow conditions up there this weekend should be really good.

It looks like we can't expect any snow overnight tonight and the latest forecast is for tomorrow to be a fairly fine day with cloud/sun and a high of 8 degrees possible in Yuzawa, so fairly mild as well.

Come tomorrow morning all of the resorts in the town area should be at least part open. The choice of places to ride is now widening, but for now if you are looking for good snow conditions then higher up is considerably better than lower down.

Expect the slopes to be busy tomorrow in popular places!

Have a great weekend.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 21st December 2007, 9:03am
Weather conditions: white sky, snowy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow is coming down heavily this morning, a bit of a surprise really - though it doesn't look as if it has been snowing long as it's only just above the ankles. It's well below zero around -4 in the village, we have a white sky and there is no wind. A pleasing sight is this , as we are still in need of much more snow to get the base thickening up on the slopes. Here's for the weekend, it's crowds and more snow! Today also sees the opening of Gondola #1 giving us a much longer ride to the bottom of the hill.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 21st December 2007, 9:09am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning - and we have another 5cm or so of snow to report this morning with the snow still coming down and poor visibility - no mountains to be seen today, though if that means an increase in snow depth that is most welcome. It's not terribly cold this morning though, and by the end of the day the forecast is for things to clear up.

We have a three day weekend approaching and tomorrow looks set to be the best of the three days weather wise -- a fine day is forecast for the region and we might get an appearance from the sun and blue skies as well. Conditions should be good out there, especially if we get some decent snowfall today.

Hakuba Now!

Friday 21st December 2007, 9:55am
Weather conditions: light Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another 25 cm of fresh fluffy powder in the valley this morning and 35 cm up top. There are no winds in the valley and are light north west in the alpine. Temperatures are mild and visibility is variable.

Happo One, Goryu and Hakuba 47 are open to the bottom today and Happo is scheduled to open their Saka lifts tomorrow.

This weekend will definitely be a white Christmas in Hakuba. So get up to the slopes and enjoy the festivities happening around town.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

The advisory stays the same as previous:

Huge amounts of snow over the last week and winds some days will mean heavily loaded lee slopes and huge unstable cornices. Snow falling all day makes this another day to enjoy the powder on the slopes. Exercise extreme caution if planning on heading out backcountry today.

Hazard:

Above tree line: High

Tree line: Considerable

Below tree line: Moderate   Read more ...

The snow started falling lightly around midday yesterday and continued to fall intermittently throughout the night. It continues to snow lightly today with 30cm of new snow above 1000m.

The forecast is for the snow to stop by late afternoon today. Tomorrow the weather should clear for a sunny start to the season for Okutone and Norn who are scheduled to open.

There is more snow forecast for Sunday morning but the remainder of the week is looking relatively dry at the moment. Fingers crossed for a day of snow on xmas.   Read more ...
