Minakami Now!

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 8:16am
Weather conditions: Clear sky and sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The clouds didn't eventuate yesterday which meant an entire day of sun and blue skies with warm temperatures.

This morning is another blue sky morning with the sun forecast to shine until dusk. Much of the snow from the past 6 days is settling fast because of the warm temperatures with snow on South faces becoming heavy.

It looks like Minakami is in for some snow tonight and possibly tomorrow, with the forecast for the weekend now changed to only cloud on Saturday, but still snow expected on Sunday.

Backcountry Advisory
The very warm temperatures of yesterday are causing the new snow to settle, almost too fast. This could cause large natural avalanches on slopes exposed to the sun (mostly South), especially with another warm day expected today. Riding in exposed alpine terrain or avalanche tracks should be avoided.

Alpine: Considerable

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 8:23am
Weather conditions: Sun, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the sun was out for most of the day and it was fairly mild at around +3 degrees early afternoon. A fine day to be out on the slopes.

After a cold night, this morning the sun is out again and actually a brighter start than yesterday. The forecast has sun lined up for the day and then snow clouds moving in tonight and snowing from then until tomorrow.

Right now the temperature is -2 and might rise to around the same as yesterday.

Take another look at those snow depths, so much better than this time last year. Kagura might be reporting 320cm of snow (less than other resorts) but we tend to feel that there is more as that number hasn't really increased even with the huge amounts of snow we got over the last week. Whatever, there's a lot up there!   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 8:47am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was a cold one last night, so much so that I had to have my electric blanket on the 'burn the toast' setting. Not nice. The temperature seems to be rising a little though this morning - as the sun creeps up higher in to the sky - it's now -10 on the temperature gauge while earlier it was off of the scale. Blue skies adorn our mountainous horizons along with little clumps of cloud sneaking through the valley like lost sheep lumbering down country lanes looking for tasty lush grasses. Blue skies it is then, but then there IS the snow dump forecasted for tonight.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 9:05am
Weather conditions: Clear, fine blue skies.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is another beautiful, sunny day in Niseko. The groomed will be perfect as it was yesterday. There is no wind and it will warm up during the day. The stars were out last night and the moon is almost full. The off piste was heavy yesterday and will be heavier today as there is absolutely no fresh.

The forecast shows a big storm coming to Hokkaido in the next couple of days. Conditions are certainly cold enough to bring snow. It is interesting to note that the temperatures on the mountain have remained belowing freezing since Jan 1st. It will be a great day on the mountain but everyone is looking forward to more powder.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 9:14am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday ended up being a fine day with the sun out for a good while, light winds and not too cold during mid-day.

This morning the sun is out, there are blue skies all around and it looks like it is going to be a fantastic day weather-wise. It's about the same temperatures as yesterday so after a cold start expect it to warm up (to be just 'cold'!). There's just a slight breeze, the slopes are not busy. Another great day to be out there.

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 9:21am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another fine day in Nozawa today. Yesterday the weather stayed fine all day. It was quite icy in the morning but became quite warm and slushy later in the day. Snow levels have dropped a fair bit, it's starting to feel like spring.

The mountain and town is full of uni students at the moment and in general they aren't very good at skiing! The weather forecast is for a reasonable dump tonight.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 9:22am
Weather conditions: blue clear skies again. heavy and packed snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another blue bird today with temps creeping up to zero degrees by lunchtime.

Groomers are super fast, and hard packed. A crust has formed on what was "fresh" a few days ago, which makes for heavy turns.

There were a few riders on the mountain yesterday and maybe today from the Burton Team. I wont name names, but just to say that it is good to see pro riders visiting Furano.

We are expecting fresh snow tonight, and a bigger system late Friday through Saturday.

With the lack of fresh snow at the moment, the terrain park in Tomamu resort is attractive as it has a great half pipe, and a good kicker and rails setup.

Myoko Now!

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 9:26am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another sunny day after a biting cold night has left hard-packed snow with decreased levels. Steeper areas may have avalanches, so it may be best to stay away from Seki Onsen or the Akakura Onsen Champion Course.

Even during the day yesterday, with the sun ashining, temps didn't get much higher than -3C, so alot of brittle snow until tonight, when the snows return; and return they will--more blizzards are rolling in this evening, with snowfall rates of 4-6cm per hour!

The pick of the day is Akakura Kanko: it's got quite a few shaded areas that never melted (and therefore never froze up again), so there's still good sliding to be had there despite the melting and freezing going on today.

Your Myoko area levels for today:
390cm (Akakura Kanko Resort);
400cm (Akakura Onsen);
295cm (Ikenotaira);
445cm on top, 285cm on the bottom (Suginohara);
380cm (Kyukamura);
275cm (Pine Valley);
530cm (Seki Onsen)!!!;
230cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
260cm (Madarao Sympathique);
275cm (Madarao Kogen);
400cm (Myoko Ski Park);
220cm (Togakushi);
230cm! (Kurohime);
200cm (Iizuna);
215cm (Iizuna Kogen)

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Partially clouded
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba currently sits under partially cloudy skies with a high cloud bank lingering above the 2000m mark. Clearer skies and sunshine from the east today with more clouds coming in for the afternoon. No new snow report today but cold temperatures have kept the snow dry in north facing shaded areas. The exposed south facing slopes will have a fairly nasty sun crust and exposed ridges are still wind blown with packed hard snow.

****

Avalanche Danger Scale:

Below Tree Line: Low

Tree Line: Low

Alpine: Considerable

Backcountry Travel Advisory as at Feb 20th:

Two back to back sunny days here in Hakuba have taken their toll on steeper south facing aspects. Expect melt freeze crust on exposed south and west face. Winds have scoured the ridges so one will encounter harder crust and wind slab on these areas. Some large cornices still remain off many ridges so take due care on or near them. Sluffing on steeper terrain is still a possibility so avoid passing under chutes/avalanche paths. North facing slopes that were not overly wind loaded were stable at lower slope angles, but on slopes above 40 degrees one could expect sluffing and slides on areas of tension (convexing rollers etc.) Instability in the form of a weak layer (failing on buried surface hoar) was found on North facing slopes (Kita Hiodori) at 90-100cm down. A resistent planer failure occuured at Hard 2 compression test.    Read more ...
