Cloudy, some rain
High winds and rain are really doing their work on the snowpack, but there's still snow up there, and people up there enjoying it. The only worry is that the high winds might cause some interruption of the gondola operation, but so far things are going good. The rain, too, seems to have tapered off, with the sun starting to come out.
Open Ski Resorts
Akakan (Akakura Kanko): Sky Cable gondola, Hotel No. 3.
A cloudy start to the day with some fairly strong winds and spots of rain at the moment. It's a warm one as well and already 17 degrees in town. Even Kagura was reporting a warm +9 degrees at 7am this morning. We should hit 21 degrees early this afternoon.
Right now the wind doesn't seem to be affecting operations at Kagura, but if they get much stronger I can see that being the case.
So we might see some rain today but from tomorrow the forecast for the rest of Golden Week is generally clear skies, lots of sun and warm temperatures to continue.
Tomorrow isn't actually a national holiday but I'm sure more than a few people will have taken a holiday and it will be busier than a normal Monday.
Kandatsu Kogen plans to be open until 8th May. Kagura plans to be open until 29th May.
A slow, steady rain has been falling since around 9:30 this morning. The system working its way across Hokkaido is huge, and we can expect to see this weather linger around until late tomorrow. Temperatures are steady around 9 degrees, but should fluctuate and fall slowly over the next 48 hours. Not exactly picturesque weather for skiing and snowboarding, but the good news is that this should clear out by the beginning of Golden Week, giving way to beautiful skies and Spring-like temperatures. Here's hoping to one last good week of skiing. Read more ...

Over at Marunuma Kogen, the only other resort remaining part open, the road connecting Gunma with Tochigi and the Nikko area is now open.
It's the last stretch of the season now and very much spring snow conditions, but still fun to be had.
Tanigawa Tenjindaira: The resort is now open and plans to be open until 15th May. The downhill course is now closed for the season.
Marunuma Kogen: Part open with No5, No3 and No1 lifts operating. The resort plans to be open until early May.
