Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Don't forget your snorkel today - it's deep! A phenomenal amount of snow has been falling in Nozawa. Knee-deep on the doorstep this morning and almost a metre on a poor old ladies car in 24 hours! (see photos) The snow depth for Yamabiko has cracked 3 metres and further down the mountain is getting a great boost too. It is still snowing heavily now.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 1st February 2008, 9:40am
Weather conditions: overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is 40cm of snow accumulated from the past 2 days and it continues to dump in Minakami this morning. The snow looks like it will last to around midday then clear up in the afternoon.

There is some sun forecast for parts of tomorrow but mostly cloudy. The snow is expected to come in again on Sunday and Monday. It is now looking like a real Winter in Minakami.

The top quad at Houdaigi that has been broken for the past 10 days will be running again from Tomorrow. Plenty of on-piste powder to be had at all resorts, with Tenjindaira nealry being too deep.

Backcountry
Sluffs and small slab avalanches highly probable in the backcountry at present as the new snow is not bonding with the older layers. Extreme caution is advised for this weekend.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 1st February 2008, 9:44am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow again this morning, with more purpose than yesterday actually... right now really low visibility outside the window. Looks cold out there and indeed the official temperatures at the resorts are once more into minus double figures for most resort areas.

Those snow depth numbers are gradually building up as well with Yakebitaiyama leading the pack with 180cm of snow at the resort with most others in the 130-160cm range. If it continues to snow today as it looks likely then we should see a bit more of an increase before the weekend starts.

Some fairly strong winds in some areas, and Okushiga Kogen are not running their gondola today yet due to the winds.

It looks like tomorrow should clear up a bit with the forecast currently telling us to expect cloud and milder temperatures.

Night operations planned at the following resort areas today:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 1st February 2008, 10:01am
Weather conditions: Snow flurries
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Updated 9:50. Some big gusts have come in meaning some limited lift action. Gondola's are running at present however some limited lift action with Goryu, 47 and Happo not running their top lifts.

******Pay extreme caution - person buried in avalanche yesterday. Yesterday a rider was completely buried after a friend above him set of a slab avalanche and was found by a beacon search 5 minutes later. This avalanche triggered on a south facing ridge. Not a bowl, not a face, a ridge. Without beacons, gear, knowledge and experience this would be a much sadder story. Pay extreme caution!*********

Backcountry Travel Advisory as at Jan 30th:

Steep Alpine bowls and steep slopes at Tree Line are still very unpredictable and should be avoided if you are not willing to accept the large risk that is associated with these slopes at this time. For areas of better stability and less risk look to moderately angled slopes in simple terrain at or below tree line. Settlement and bonding below tree line have created a relatively stable pack across the board in the Hakuba valley but that does NOT include steep open terrain or gullies that may produce slab avalanches and will definitely produce slides in the new snow that has fallen over the last 2 days. The 30 + cm of new snow that has come down with no wind and is laying over a layer of surface hoar frost that was produced 3 nights ago pre the new snow falling. The surface hoar is sitting on sun crust on southern slopes and will produce slides that run far and fast with continued accumulation of new snow. Be aware of increases in wind speed and the associated loading of lee slopes as wind changes direction to North Westerlies and picks up as the High pressure system that is approaching hits some time early tomorrow morning.

Avalanche Hazard:

Alpine: High
Tree-line: High
Below tree-line: Considerable   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 1st March 2008, 7:26am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a fine day yesterday, this morning is a little different. Back to grey clouds and actually some snow was falling about an hour ago but is holding off for the moment. Snow is actually forecast for most of the day as the temperature drop further below zero once again. Snow is in fact already snowing higher up at Kagura.

Stronger winds forecast for later this afternoon but right now it is just a gentle wind.

Tonight is the Yuzawa Town Snow Festival, which is held at the Nunoba ski ground just near the base of the Yuzawa Ropeway. Look out for various events there if you are around.

Tomorrow looks like it will be fine or just cloudy.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Saturday 1st March 2008, 8:02am
Weather conditions: currently snowing. temps sitting around 0 degrees.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Birds chirping, roads melting, snow at 0 degrees Celsius....welcome to the first day of spring. It's time for a spring wax!

The mountain yesterday was very heavy and sticky down low. There was a fair bit of fresh snow, so there was untracked pretty much all day in parts, but the snow was heavy and it took a lot of effort. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was Spring Slush yet, but it is certainly not powder. Fresh snow in any conditions however makes for smooth turns, and they certainly felt smooth and bottomless yesterday.

All the snow on the roads has melted, and then excess water has frozen overnight so it's very slippery around town.

We have woken to snow falling this morning and the forecast is for snow through till late afternoon today. It is warm however, so you won't need too many layers out there.

Tonight in town is the FINAL cultural event of the year. Congratulations to the Tourist Association and all performers this winter season who have provided excellent entertainment all year. The Cultural Night has become an important part of the Furano Ski Holiday experience. Otsukaresama deshita.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 1st March 2008, 8:06am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow is with us again! After a very fine day yesterday, those snow clouds came back to Shiga Kogen overnight and there is a few cm of fresh snow this morning - with more likely to come during the day. Yesterday was a very mild day and as you can see from the temperatures below, today looks set to be relatively mild as well at least in the afternoon. More snow is lined up for the day and temperatures likely to decrease as the day progresses.

However it is currently looking like tomorrow might be a fine day.

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Sun Valley
- Maruike
- Mammoth
- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama
- Kumanoyu   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 1st March 2008, 8:54am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Goryu ski patrol are reporting 10cms down on Iimori and 20 cms up top but this doesn't correspond with the 20-30 cms on top of cars in Echoland this morning. Compare this to Happo patrol who measured 50-60 cms of snow last night. Winds at this point do not seem too bad...there'll be powder albeit a little wet and heavy and plenty of it..get on the skifield and rip it up...

Backcountry advisory update:

Huge amounts of heavy wet snow overnight has pushed up the avalanche danger scale. With the new snow sitting on the sun crust from yesterday and ice layer from the high winds it is quite likely on steep sun-facing aspects for natural triggered avalanches to occur and even on moderate slope angles human triggered slides are probable. Travel in the back country is NOT advised today.

Avalanche Danger:

Below Tree Line: Considerable

Tree Line: Considerable

Alpine: High
