Weather conditions: Cloud, sun at times
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a cloudy start to the day but just now the sun has popped out from behind the clouds. Wait, it has disappeared again.

Anyway, we hope it is the last of that for a while as the snow is forecast to be with us by around lunchtime and then right through tomorrow and into Saturday. At the moment it is around 0 degrees after a chilly night.

We'll update this report with the latest news later on in the day...   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Thursday 1st February 2007, 9:27am
Weather conditions: Overcast, light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We had some very strange weather yesterday - 'four seasons in one day' kind of day. It started off warm and overcast, then in the early afternoon it started to snow, then it became very windy and started dumping snow, then the snow and wind disappeared, the sky cleared, sun came out, the temperature rose again and the snow got very heavy and sticky, then in the evening the temperature dropped and it started to snow lightly with no wind at all.

This morning is very calm with light snow and the temperature is around -2. The forecast is predicting intermitent snow for the next few days with the temps dropping to their normal level again tomorrow.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 1st February 2007, 9:41am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is another cloudy start to the day and a little colder than it was yesterday and we have a promise of snow later on in the day and through tomorrow into the weekend.

As you can see by the official snow depths below, which haven't really changed in a fair while, the numbers are still way down on an average year for the region. The slopes are getting to really be in need of a decent cover of fresh snow with a few bare patches starting to appear where usually there would be a couple of meters of snow.

Everyone is looking to the next few days for something like normal conditions to return!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 1st February 2007, 10:06am
Weather conditions: Snow on the mountain, overcaste in the village.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The expected snow has begun. It is now snowing lightly on the on the mountain and the trees are all fairytale white again! The visibility on the mountain is getting progressively worse as the weather begins to set in. The Temperatures on the mountain are -1C at Yamabiko and -2C at Uenotaira. The base depths are down from yesterday with around 160cm at the top and at Uenotaira 125cm, but today and tomorrow should provide a welcome top-up. Winds will be up to 30km/h today so it will not be an ideal day to get out there; nevertheless, people are heading to the mountain now.

The forecast is for at least 35cm to fall today at the top. Friday will also be snowy with Saturday clearing during the day but light snow to resume Saturday night.

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 1st February 2007, 10:51am
Weather conditions: Snowing forcast to continue
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow that started falling in dribs and drabs early this morning picked up to S4 (4 cm's / hour) at 7:30 has now picked up to S5 and continues to fall hard. We can expect up wards of 50 cm's by tomorrow if this rate of snow fall continues. Winds are calm and visability is variable. The runs are already getting soft and fluffy. Let's just say things are looking great for Friday through the week end.

HIRAKAWA DATA NOT TAKEN TODAY (Roddy's on holiday)
The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present:
Maximum:
Minimum:
Wind:
Winds aloft:
Precipitation:
Barometer and trend:
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24):
Total depth of snowpack (HS):
Foot penetration:

Density of surface snow:
Crust:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: High

At Tree Line: High

Below Tree Line: considerable

It's snowing everybody! Good news because there's powder on the runs, but as we all know, bad news as far as avalanche risk is concerned. The forcast is for continuing snow for at least the next 36 hours. This fresh snow will not yet be bonded to the snow below it, so any high angle slopes will be sluffing, even in the trees.
As the fresh snow builds up, the depth of the sluff will also obviously increase, and the danger of being carried into terrain traps or smashed into trees increases with it. As always, ride with, and take care of a partner.

Travel Advisory:
Hazard: High.
Naturally occuring loose snow avalanches will occur on high angle slopes so travel beneath steep terrain and in valleys carries significant risks. Watch for slabs forming over the next few days with more consolidation in th new storm snow and rapid loading. Not much wind right now to speak of by the continuation of frontal systems from the North West is sure to bring some wind with it along the way so use greater caution as winds pick up in strength. The new snow is now over riding the sun crust that was created over the last sunny days which we will here forth refer to as the February 1st sun crust as it was buried today. With rapid loading on all aspects we will see pockets of old surface snow on top of wind slab give way to soft slabs of 45 cm's plus. Take du care in steep North East slopes.

Naeba Now!

Thursday 1st February 2007, 12:09pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Things seem to be cooling down a bit around here as of recently.

No more blue skies today - it appears the weather is going for the change, there's even the odd snow flake making its way down to here from somewhere up there. Due to the colder air, we're looking at some icy patches - especially around any jumps or banks.

Here's looking at todays snow, woo hoo!! Should be an excellent weekend!   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 1st March 2007, 7:25am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was just a sprinkling of snow yesterday, and another sprinkling overnight here in Yuzawa at town level. For all we can say it was snowing yesterday, there's not much to show for it in at town level. Higher up at Naeba and Kagura though there was more snowfall, and so once again it is a case of 'best conditions up top'.

It is cloudy early on this morning but the forecast is for another fine and probably sunny day with temperatures hitting around 5 degrees and more of the same lined up for Friday and the weekend as well.

(Gala Yuzawa will be open today).   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 1st March 2007, 7:54am
Weather conditions: Sun, some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We got about 5cm of fresh snow yesterday morning and there was some more snowfall through the day yesterday and overnight, meaning that the slopes have got a bit of a welcome topup (and those roads are once more white just as they should be!) The slopes were in decent shape on the sampling I had myself.

Yesterday was a cold evening and the temperatures were still down but this morning the sun is back with us and it is shining bright early on and so things should warm up during the day. It also looks like it is going to be another run of fine days through into the weekend with the next real chance of snow looking like Monday.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 1st March 2007, 8:11am
Weather conditions: Changeable
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Blue skies with low, fast moving clouds, like that from a high speed movie of a dream or twilight world.

A steady, stern wind with -4 degrees in the village, not much more snow since yesterdays report - what has fallen has been blown around, so we're talking a nice hard pack, the kind that fills you with real satisfaction - when you pump your lines through it - better than the light fluffy stuff.

OK, so here's for todays art, go and sculpt some lines with your legs, look back up the mountain and smile.

Furano Now!

Thursday 1st March 2007, 8:12am
Weather conditions: Sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another bright, sunny morning. It is -15 down in town at the moment, the coldest morning for a while but the sun should warm it up fairly quickly. The forecast is now predicting snow on saturday. It will be another great day to hit the groomers and take in the view of the Daisetszan mountain range across the valley, it should be clear enough to pick out the smoking volcano directly across from Furano town.

Niseko Now!

Thursday 1st March 2007, 8:39am
Weather conditions: Mostly clear.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a little snow fall yesterday and some very light snow over night the mountain is still in a good condition for riding.

A high pressure is moving across Hokkaido and will most likely bring some more sunny days.

Today the weather should be mostly clear with no sign of precipitation. The same type of weather should carry on into the weekend followed by some light snowy periods next week.
