Snow and weather reports posted on Tuesday 16th January 2018
Sunday 1st December 2013, 9:30am
So we are now into December and the second day of the season here.
To recap, looking at our reports (the info can always be found on the bottom of the report pages), we observed 123cm of snowfall during the month of November. That's here in the base Hirafu area. As those who have followed our Niseko Now reports before will know, we also keep an eye on the official snowfall statistics coming from Kutchan town, and for November 2013 they had reported 99cm. It's expected that the base area will get more than the Kutchan reading, and of course that there will be more up on the slopes too.
Anyway, it was great to get out there yesterday. There's still some sasa still poking through on the runs. Some of the usual characters turned up for opening and there was a bit of a party feel going on, with limited operations not dampening spirits.
I'm seeing 5cm of snow since my last report this morning. Snow depth numbers at the resorts don't seem to have changed apart from 10cm being added to the upper slopes at Annupuri, and I am this morning hearing of 10cm or so fresh. It's just cloudy at the moment and no wind. All calm.
From today Niseko Grand Hirafu are operating the Ace Family lift as well as the two lifts they had open yesterday.
As planned the Community Chair and Banzai Chair lifts at Niseko Village are moving this morning.
And Niseko Annupuri are also opening the Gondola at 10am this morning and the Jumbo Number 3 lift at 10:15am.
Still very limited operations, but good to see more open up.
Another look at the forecast and a few sprinklings aside it's looking quite dry up through the end of the coming week. We'll keep an eye on that.
Good morning from Zao. It is just cloudy this morning with a moderate wind.
We have Utopia and Parasise pair lifts moving today, but they will be closed again tomorrow as we wait for now snow for the resort to open up more terrain and lifts - it's all still limited to top areas at the moment. Down at base there is still only a thin layer of snow, getting to be patchy in places.
Just taking a look at the forecasts. It's not looking very promising at all for this coming week - it should keep quite cold but there's not much snow lined up through until at least the end of the week.
I'll update the report again in a few days with the latest.

It was a really fine day for opening yesterday with the eager heading up for those first turns of the season early yesterday morning. The snow is by no means deep yet - officially 40cm on the Yamabiko runs - but some pockets of good snow was there to be found and fun was had.
Visibility is fairly poor on the top runs this morning with cloud and fog. Light rain in the village and the resort reporting light snow before opening on the open areas at the top of the mountain. We might get a few cm today, but tomorrow the sun will probably be back and there doesn't look like much chance of decent snowfall through the week. Looks like we will need to be patient for the moment.
Resort operations remain the same today, details below.

It's a cloudy morning in Hakuba, with some very light snow trying it's hardest since early morning, after that clear and beautiful day that we had yesterday.
No new snowfall in terms of cm though at both base and upper elevations.
It is relatively mild this morning though, and according to the local forecast there is a chance of some rain in the village, though at higher elevations I would expect that to be snow if anything. A look at the webcams shows snow is actually falling on those upper slopes at the moment.
Yesterday, Hakuba 47 actually opened up more of it's slopes and has done so again today. The upper part of Route 1 and Route 2,5 and 6 are now open - basically the top and upper middle chunk of the resort area. The Gondola at 47 is not yet moving though, so access is still via Hakuba Goryu.
Hakuba Goryu have their Panorama and Grand Prix courses open.
Official snow depth numbers and operations (as of 30th November 2013):
Hakuba Goryu Upper - 80cm Iimori - 0cm Toomi - 0cm Lifts operating: Gondola, Alps Number 1, Alps Number 3.
Hakuba 47: Upper - 80cm Lower - 15cm Lifts operating: Line C, Line E
Happo-one: Usagidaira - 90cm Nakiyama - 0cm Sakka - 0cm Lifts operating: Adam Gondola, Alpen Quad, Kurobishi Number 2 quad, Hakuba Kokusai Number 3 pair, Panorama pair, Kokusai Number 1 pair. The Gondola and Kokusai Number 1 are just for 'getting there'.

Yesterday ended up being a very fine day weather wise. Clear blue skies.
Rain moved in later on in the day though, and it's raining here in town now as well.
Kagura aren't reporting any new snowfall in terms of cm this morning and visibility looks poor up there at the moment.
Not much else to report this morning really. Hopefully some snowfall during the day at higher elevations and for tomorrow the forecast looks like a confused mix of cloud, sun, rain and snow - one thing that looks fairly certain is that it will be somewhat warmer than today with a high temperature approaching double digits in town.
The 6 day forecast as it stands at the moment though is not promising any heavy snowfall in the coming week.
