Partly cloudy, blue skies
Ah... April 1st.
I'll refrain from getting your hopes up with an endlessly funny April Fool tale of deep epic bottomless (insert other marketing-style adjective here) snow in Niseko!
Instead, I'll tell you about the rain last night we got here... but did those upper areas get a (very) thin dusting? We'll have to get up there to find out!
Today we should see lots of sun and blue sky, with a certain amount of white clouds hanging on.
Easter isn't a thing in Japan of course, but this coming Friday may well be 'good' if the snow that some forecasts tell us about comes off. Might well just end up rain top to bottom but sounds like there's a chance it might be snow up there. We shall see.
Resort specific news as of 8:30am - subject to change during the day

Cloudy and rainy
Morning from Hakuba.
Another feel-good day yesterday out on the mountains though it's a bit different today. Mild overnight and while it was expected it's still sad to report that it is raining this morning.
Some forecasts say snow might be possible high up before tomorrow, but it'll very likely be raining here until tonight. Sunshine is forecast for tomorrow so it's limited. However, rainy conditions are forecast from Friday and over the weekend... going to be warm too.
Now that we are into April things are becoming more limited - with a few areas now closing, like the Iimori area of Hakuba Goryu. The better snow conditions can be found higher up so that's where you'd probably be heading anyway but more and more we'll see lower areas closing now. Best to check with the resorts to see what exactly is open if you plan to go in the coming weeks. I'll try to outline the main points in my reports here, which will continue through until the last lift stops for the season at Happo-one on May 10th.
Official snow depth numbers and operations at time of writing on Wednesday 1st April 2015. Subject to change during the day:
Hakuba Goryu: Hakuba Goryu plans to be at least part open until Wednesday 6th May. The lower Iimori area is now closed for the season.
- Alps Daira - 285cm - Toomi - 110cm
Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 plans to be at least part open until Wednesday 6th May. Currently all open (top to bottom) apart from a small lower part of R7.
- Upper - 270cm - Lower - 110cm
Happo-one: Happo-one plans to be at least part open until Sunday 10th May.
It is a mix of cloud and sun today with temperatures a little cooler than they have been over the last couple of days. Last evening a rain front came through so the snow pack will be quite wet today. The outlook for Thursday is for sun and calm conditions, while Friday will see a heavy rain system arrive. Read more ...

It’s the first day of April and we still have an abundance of snow, even if it isn't fresh!
It is overcast with low winds and the temperature is around 3 degrees this morning.... rain expected later in the day, probably even up at Kagura.
The Takenokoyama Romance lift and the number one gondola are both closed.
Otherwise Naeba and Kagura are open as planned this morning.
Official snow depths:
Naeba: 260cm Kagura: 370cm
0cm Naeba 0cm Kagura
Planned end of season
Naeba: Naeba will be open daily until April 5th and then Saturdays and holidays only until May 6th (not including April 29th)
Kagura: The main Kagura area, via Mitsumata Ropeaway, will be open daily until May 31st The Tashiro area will be open until May 6th.
This Naeba Now report started updating for the 2014/2015 season on 31st January 2015. As such, the 'observed snowfall season' numbers shown at the bottom of the report will only reflect data from that date onwards. Momentary sun, but overcast again
Heavy snow today (nearly 70cm) means that all the resorts have decided to keep going with all lifts operating. Golden Week? We're looking to June skiing here in Myoko.
Sorry, I had to do it (you know what today is). I've been good over the many years I've had the pleasure of reporting on my town, I've always been tempted to do at least a small April Fool. Now I'm happy.
Especially as the weather is not that great today. Light rain to start the day, with a bit of sun peeking through a few minutes ago. But it looks like heavier rain later in the day. Rain, in fact, could be pretty common over the coming week, although it should be pretty nice tomorrow.
Akakura Kanko: 400cm, 7° Open through May 5. Myokokogen Sky Cable gondola and No. 3 lift
Akakura Onsen: 185cm, 5° Open until April 5. Lifts: Yodel Nos. 1, 2 and 5, Kumado Nos. 1 and 4
Ikenotaira Onsen: 200cm, 5° Planning to stay open until April 5. Lifts: Shirakaba Capsule, Ikenotaira Quad, AB No. 1
A much greyer palette this morning and unfortunately - as forecast - it's raining.
Definitely not as warm today, as you might expect, but not cold enough for snow. Certainly not here in town anyway... let's see if Kagura can surprise us with some fluffy news tomorrow morning (though best not to expect anything there!)
The sun is due to be back tomorrow with clear skies and warmer conditions once again. After that and into the weekend I'm afraid rain is what is on the forecasts currently.
The coming weekend is the last weekend for a number of resorts in the area, would be good if they could enjoy some fine weather for it.
Planned closing dates for resorts in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region Information as currently available and of course subject to change depending on conditions. Resorts not mentioned below are now closed.

Ended up not being able to avoid the rain today after a cloudy start. It hasn't been as warm today either. Tomorrow we will probably see the sun again and it will be warmer, but more rain is forecast for the weekend.
The coming weekend is the last for the Minakami Kogen Ski Resort and Minakami Hodaigi resorts.
After that it'll just be Tenjindaira which plans to be open through until early May.
Note that the Tenjin Toge pair lift at Tenjindaira will be closed now on weekdays through until Friday 24th April. The reason being that the lift is used for tourism in the 'green season' and they need to prepare it for those operations. It does seem a long time to be closed for that, but that's what it says here! That lift being closed does limit things on weekdays, so do keep in mind if you are planning on visiting.
We'll keep the Minakami Now page updated occasionally through April, ideally with a pre-weekend update.
Planned closing dates of ski resorts in Minakami (subject to change):
Until 5th April Minakami Kogen Ski Resort Minakami Hodaigi
Until early May Tanigawa Tenjindaira
Now closed for the season Oana Norn Minakami Okutone Snow Park White Valley Minakami Kogen
