It was a cold night last night and this morning things are looking very white with a cover of snow down to town level. There was probably about 7cm of snow on the car this morning. Right now it is still snowing lightly and the forecast is for snow this morning clearing up in the early afternoon and fine weather tomorrow.... but it probably won't rise to more than around 3 degrees today.   Read more ...

Wow! It's here now! Winter has arrived! At least 20cm has fallen overnight in the village of Hirafu. The mountain has closer to 40cm over the last 24 hours of weather that has moved through the region. The results of a Low of 986hp moving north and a high (1042hp) over Honshu have given us a great starting point for the season. Predictions are positive with some more intense systems coming into view on Wednesday night and into Thursday which are sure to provide some more snowfalls.   Read more ...

After the fine weather for the opening on Saturday, yesterday the weather was a bit wild and the real snow started to fall and cover the green of the lower slopes with some white. This morning there's around 10cm or so of snow on the ground and it is still snowing lightly as I speak. It's good to see things looking properly winter-like!   Read more ...

The snow has arrived! About 15cm or so on the car this morning and it is feeling very winter-like all of a sudden with snow clouds still around and snow still falling.

The Kumanoyu part of Shiga Kogen also opened yesterday with one lift moving and 600m of skiable snow.... a base of artificial snow covered with the fresh snow that we have seen since yesterday. The resort is reporting a snow depth of 25cm.

The Mammoth area plans to open a run from 22nd November if we're lucky...   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Monday 19th November 2007, 9:34am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing 1cm/hour
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow came in hard and fast last throughout the night, accumulating 25cm at the valley level and up to 40 cm at Tenjindaira and Houdaigi ski areas. The snow has now slowed down to under 1cm/hour and the forecast is for fine weather from this afternoon.

The early snow bodes well for Tenjindaira opening this weekend (24th). The rest of the week looks like a mixture of rain and sun for the valley but there may be more snow in the mountains above 1500m.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 19th November 2007, 13:09pm
Weather conditions: Broken cloud with sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Pleasantly surprised this morning to find about 5cm of snow here in Hakuba Village this morning. Snow fell from about 5PM last night as temperatures dropped below freezing and snow flurries rolled into the Hakuba valley. All the runs on the hills looked great (not rideable yet though) with a white covering of snow on them. The upper slopes could expect about 10cm or more and with any luck should remain on the ground to build up our base. The sun today will make short work of the snow at the bottom and the roads are already melted clear of snow.

View the shots below to get the idea. As the day continued, the snow melted in low-lying areas.
