Appi Kogen Now!
Thursday 19th April 2018, 7:30am
Clear blue skies
Hello from Appi.
The sun is out this morning and there we are enjoying blue skies and fine weather conditions.
The forecast for the next three or four days is lots more sunshine along with warmer temperatures, especially around Sunday when it might even warm up to around 20C at base.
Those five lifts remain operating with the central area of the resort remaining open. You can still ski from the top of the Gondola down to base, and snow cover remains pretty good. But of course it is the second half of April so it's full on spring conditions.
Next update next week.
Official snow depth:
Planned lift operations (subject to change):
- APPI Gondola - Central number 1 lift - Central number 2 lift - Central number 3A lift - Central number 4 lift
Appi plans to be open until Golden Week in early May Read more ...

Almost all clear blue skies
Morning from Geto Kogen.
Fine weather yesterday.
And fine weather today with just a breeze.
That's what is on the forecast for the day too - and for the next few days, with gradually increasing temperatures.
It's going to be a nice weekend.
Official snow depths:
Top: 305cm Base: 180cm
Number 1 Gondola and Number 1 pair lift are operating
The clouds have cleared, it's dry and sunny this morning. Clear blue skies. It's going to be a nice day. And warmer too with temperatures rising to around 20C.
More fine weather is due over the next few days too, including the weekend.
This coming weekend of course is the last weekend of the season for GALA Yuzawa.
No specific news from Naeba yet, so we should presume that they will be opening up again for the weekend as planned.

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Thursday 19th April 2018, 8:02am
Clear above the mountain (some low cloud early on)
Good morning from Nozawa.
This morning there's lovely blue skies above the mountain, though some early morning low cloud above the village - as you can see on the third image below. That should clear up pretty quickly leaving us with a fine day - with more of the same coming over the next few days at least. It's going to be warm over the weekend too with temperatures rising into the 20's.
The resort is still reporting 145cm of snow depth on the upper Yamabiko area. I wouldn't say it is that uniformly up there, but there is still good snow cover.
Thursday 19th April 2018
Fresh snowfall since yesterday as reported by the resort:
- Nagasaka Gondola - Yamabiko Four - Yamabiko Number 2 Four - (More may be open for the coming weekend)

Blue skies and sunny
As we expected, it's another fine and sunny morning here with clear blue skies.
There is going to be more of the same into the weekend with gradually warmer temps each day. (Some forecasts are showing a little rain around Sunday, but other than that lots of sun).
Someone sent in a mail asking me if I was looking forward to having more time to enjoy my early morning toast once the season is finished. The answer to that is - yes, of course! (As much as I love writing these reports). After writing a report every morning for over five months, it always feels a bit odd at first when the season is over. But, I can stock up on the toast and go into hibernation to recharge for a few months, which is a lot of fun.
Thursday 19th April 2018
Resort specific information (operations subject to change):
- Ace Number 2 Center Four (* operating daily until 6th May) - King Number 3 (* operating daily until 6th May) - King Number 4 (* operating daily until 6th May) - Hirafu Gondola (* operating only on 21st, 22nd April & 28th April - 6th May)
- Most of Hirafu remains open - Lower part of Super closed - All of the Hanazono area is closed
So, not nice rain during the morning but the clouds started clearing late morning and we got to see some blue sky behind the remaining clouds and sunshine at times in the afternoon. It felt pretty chilly on the mountain as well.
That seems to be about to change with lots of sunshine and temperatures due to rise over the next few days... approaching mid 20's over the weekend!
Today we should see a high of around 20C in the village.
The sun is out and it is a lovely clear blue sky morning.
The lower section of the winding R-7 course at Hakuba 47 is now closed with just part of the upper area of R-7 apparently remaining open. R-1 back down to base is still open though, but beginners are recommended to use the Gondola to get back to base.
Cherry blossom alert.

Good morning from Shiga Kogen and I am here with a pre-weekend report.
After some rain we are now enjoying clearer skies and through into the weekend there is a lot of sun and warmth forecast (up to higher teens over the weekend).
Nice and warm with snow gradually retreating back up the mountains. Still, enough snow on the open slopes to enjoy some late season riding.
I'm off to Tokyo for the weekend and will be back with you early in the week. I hope you have a good weekend.
I cannot find any further ski lift info updates from resorts at this point, so for now things seem to be going to be opening for the weekend as planned. If you are planning on being in Shiga Kogen over the weekend though, I recommend checking with official sources.
The section of Route 292 between Shiga Kogen and Kusatsu is still closed - but will be opening tomorrow (Friday 20th) at 10am.
