Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 19th April 2011, 8:41am
Weather conditions: Heavy rain (town); Snow (upper Kagura)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well, as expected it is raining this morning in Yuzawa... and Kagura say that snow is falling on the upper slopes of the resort.

Last night the winds started getting fairly noisy though it wasn't raining until very late. It's still coming down now and looks set in for the day. As I said Kagura is reporting that while it is still rain at Mitsumata, it is snowing in the upper Kagura area. I have no confirmation of new cm of snow up there so I am presuming that there hasn't been anything significant yet and that any blanket of new snow will be coming from now. Some reports/forecasts saying there's a chance of up to 20cm before tomorrow morning.

It's a fairly chilly feeling 6 degrees at the moment in Yuzawa.

I'll let you know tomorrow!

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 19th April 2011, 9:05am
Weather conditions: Rain in village, snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's raining in Hakuba this morning. The good news though is that this morning Goryu is reporting 3cm of fresh snow up on the upper slopes and it is snowing up there. It might be dull and wet down here but on higher ground we can hope for a new covering of snow. Snow can be seen coming down on the resort webcams (see Webcam Center) so come on bring it on...! Looks like it is coming down nicely at the moment up by the top of the gondola at Hakuba 47. With the snow of course visibility will be limited.

Anyway, rain in the village and snow up top is what is forecast for the day - or until this afternoon at least. Right now down here it is about 7 degrees.

Hope to bring news of fresh cm tomorrow morning.

Tuesday 19th April 2011, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, sleet/snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I have a sprinkling of snow to report here in Shiga Kogen early on. Just a thin layer really, but a real contrast from the warm spring weather of the last week as temperatures dip. The skies are grey and right now it's more like sleet falling, but it seem to be trying to snow and the local forecast is calling for new cm during today. Gambare!

Tuesday 19th April 2011, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Rain, snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The rain is coming down in Nozawa this morning I'm afraid. Quite heavy too. I do bring associated good news though - it looks like it is snowing up at Yamabiko and should be for most of the day. While of course the lifts aren't moving up there right now, a new blanket of snow would be good preparation for the upper slopes opening from Saturday. So, yes please, let it snow!

Snow is getting a bit thin on the ground on the lower slopes now, so the opening of the upper slopes again is perfectly times.... there's still a lot of snow up there, officially 265cm on Yamabiko courses.

Myoko Now!

Tuesday 19th April 2011, 10:23am
Weather conditions: Rain, right on the edge of snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I would probably tell you that this is not a great day for skiing (but I wouldn't want to put anyone off of skiing, or take anything away from the brave resorts that are still running), but the kind of dismal rain that is falling has been right on the edge of snow all day. Some snow did fall over the weekend at high elevations (it was a blizzard at about 2100 meters, actually, for a short period on Saturday), so who knows? Adventurous sliders, don't give up!

It's cold, too—the cherry trees may be in full bloom down the road in Takada (Joetsu), but there's no sign of the buds getting ready to burst around here. The sugi trees have been sending out pollen, of course, but that's just one reason to be thankful for rain and colder temps.
