Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 9:52am
Weather conditions: Light rain, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday perhaps wasn't as bad as it could have been in terms of rain but unfortunately after what seems to have been a relatively dry overnight there is light rain falling again here in Yuzawa. Even Kagura are saying rain this morning. It is about 5 degrees and hardly any wind, and the forecast gives us hope that this won't be long-lasting and also that we might get to see a bit of snow tonight into tomorrow.... nothing major though but it will definitely be colder.

Naeba Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 9:55am
Weather conditions: Cloud, rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hmmm this morning isn't the best of mornings to have to report from Mt Naeba. It's rain I'm afraid - even high up on the mountain. As such, I am officially going to sulk.

But before I do that, there's not much of a wind and the resort areas today seem to be open as normal. Hopefully the rain won't last for long and we can still hope for that snow tonight and into tomorrow.

Anyway, I'll be with you tomorrow with some hopefully brighter news!

Madarao Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 10:04am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fog, light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Madarao. Actually I picked a good time to not be covering the weather in a way, because it hasn't been very good! It has been a wet weekend by all accounts - this is coming from my friend who was here as I was away - and it's a foggy and wet feeling morning this morning as well and warm too. About 5 degrees now and probably rise just a little more by this afternoon.

There is some good news. Potential snowfall late tonight and into tomorrow morning so all being well there might be a layer of white for me to report tomorrow morning.

Minakami Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 10:41am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Warm and cloudy this morning in Minakami. There was a bit of rain earlier lower down and the snow is soft and sugary as a result. It is still good out there but very much spring conditions at the moment. It looks as if it will turn to snow tonight but we might have some sunny conditions next week with Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday looking particularly promising.   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 10:47am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Zao. It's just a cloudy one this morning with poor visibility on the mountain - well the upper slopes anyway as they aren't visible from base, but the lower slopes are looking ok. It is a mildish feeling +3 degrees lower down. And that's really all there is to report this morning at the moment.

Better news looking forward a bit. Colder temperatures and a chance of snow are on the horizon. Starting tonight perhaps. It does look like there will be strong winds along with this change in conditions though, so we'll have to keep an eye out on that. So hope to bring positive news tomorrow morning.

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 11:13am
Weather conditions: 5km/h East
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Very light rain here in Hakuba this morning again with no new snow to report overnight.

It will probably keep raining through the day today on and off, hopefully not heavy, and the temperature will keep on above the freezing level with a high of around 6 degrees. Sorry I can't bring better news about the current conditions.

But -- it may turn into snowfall later tonight if we get cold enough and into early tomorrow morning, though it would seem it won't last too long. But it should definitely be turning colder over the next few days so fingers crossed for that.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 12:02pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been a pretty overcast start to the day here in Nozawa with nothing falling from the sky at present.

The winds have died and the Nagasaka Gondola and all lifts are back up and operational. The rain yesterday did not do the base any favours and it was a pretty warm day. Almost didn't need the Jacket at the Festival last night. Was a good night and quite a few people lined the main street for the festivities. Oyu Dori was closed to cars, which is always good to see. Would be nice if one day it was a permanent fixture, maybe even just allow electric golf buggies like in Zermatt. I know there is some talk of it so will have to wait and see.

Good news is temps are on their way down and we are expecting some decent snow up top tonight. Followed by some sun and light snow over the next few days with freezing levels staying down until Friday.

Free lift tickets for kids today too so a good excuse to get them off the computer games and up the mountain.

Uenotaira:

Nagasaka:

Furano Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 12:44pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's been above freezing for the past 24 hours here at village level, meaning that a lot of the snow is going to be rather soft towards the bottom half of the mountain. We managed to dodge any significant precipitation, so all the snow should still be in relatively good condition. However, the big news is the cold front working it's way through the area should push through in the early afternoon. After that, expect the temperature to drop like rocks. We're looking at lows of -12 for the overnight hours and then highs below freezing tomorrow. The good news is, we should see a lot of snow with this system, so here's keeping our fingers crossed for more winter!

The wind is really kicking up out there with the onset of the approaching front, so be sure to bundle up out there.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 17:18pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Many apologies for the delayed report today - we had some technical difficulties.

Niseko may be on the verge of a storm here. It's snowing now and looking like quite the low pressure moving in bringing cold temps and *gasp* snow! Yes that yuki we all love may be finally making an appearance. We are hitting mid-March and there may not be many more opportunities to get out there and enjoy fresh snow. It looks like Tuesday will be the main day for snow with a bit of wind and bad weather. The latter part of this week should make for some nice powder skiing if we do end up getting the locally projected snow.

The avalanche danger will exist as any new snow will automatically have bonding issues with any S/SE/SW face and even other aspects as well.

Let's keep our fingers crossed and I hope everyone gets a couple good turns in. There are still some good spots on the resort in the higher north facing areas. Best of luck on your search!

Niseko Village:

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -2C, no snowfall and no development of snowdrifts. Coastal data: N8m/s at Benkei cape, 0.6m waves and 1010hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak: N4m/s, -6.3C. Annupuri 1000m: 480cm snowdepth.
Snowfall transition: Although a winter weather pattern is making cold air to flow south towards Japan, snowfall almost non-existent. Small snowdrifts due to wind-blown snow are observed in leeward ridgeline above 800m.
Hazard evaluation: Cornices have grown due to the strong wind and are unstable. Collapsing cornices can trigger shallow avalanches. The snow surface conditions, except the groomers, are pretty bad as the season is shifting to Spring. Beware of slipdrops and hitting trees. Better stay away from gullies and valley bottoms in order to avoid being caught in climax (ground) avalanches. Avalanches only become an accident if someone is involved in there.
Gates: Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30am. Always be vigilant and prudent in the backcountry. Have a safe day

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 17:32pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, sleet
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been another wet kind of day here in Shiga Kogen. Very foggy too as well here as I write this rather late report (sorry) and we approach darkness. But generally visibility has been just ok in some lower areas but higher areas with a lot of cloud. It hasn't been busy either really today with perhaps more than a few giving it a miss with the weather conditions.

OK so lets hope we are over this mild wet kind of weather and the signs are still there that we will see some potentially even quite decent snowfall overnight tonight. The next 3 days or so will see a return to the cold conditions as well, so I am hoping that in my next report I'll be able to bring you news of that.

Nighta operations this evening planned at the following resort area:

Myoko Now!

Sunday 18th March 2012, 19:09pm
Weather conditions: Fog, mist, gray
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A pretty gray day, but at least the wind was down from yesterday, and it wasn't exactly rain (kind of heavy mist). But it was very, very gray; a good day for a hike in the woods (which I did), not such a great day to be out on an open slope without anything to give perspective. Off piste , the snow was pretty sticky.

It's going to get better as we get close to the end of the main season. Some of the resorts will be staying open; I'll have more information soon.
