Furano Now!

Sunday 18th February 2007, 8:06am
Weather conditions: Overcast, sunny spells.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snow overnight and its a clear sunny morning so should be a good day for checking out the views across the valley and watching the world cup half pipe event which takes place over in Furano Zone. Unfortunately it won't be very nice conditions for skiing/snowboarding because the snow will be compacted and icy after the last few days warm weather.

The forecast is predicting the snow to return later this afternoon and then we should have snow showers every day for the next week.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Sunday 18th February 2007, 8:20am
Weather conditions: Light snow fall.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday it did remain mostly clear and also warmed up a bit. At village level it was hovering around 0 degrees around mid-day.

Now it is snowing very lightly and there has been a skiff of snow overnight. On the hill will be a little more, maybe 1-2cm's. Today looks like it will be very similar to yesterday. Light snow showers this morning then clearing for a time this afternoon allowing some sunshine through. There are light winds down low and moderate on the mountain and the visibility will improve during the day.

Tonight should be cold and clear and tomorrow is forecast to be similar to today. However by Monday afternoon/evening we should see some more snowfall.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 18th February 2007, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Overcast to fog, snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday's good visibility is an almost forgotten dream this morning. In the Hime Kawa valley the cloud ceiling is enshrouding the top of the ski-jump at the Happo One Lift Company. You can see across the valley, but just. the good news is that it is snowing steadily at about one centimetre per hour (S1). This precipitation is forecast to continue so till late in the afternoon. No great winds seem associated with this precipitation.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: 1.0 C
Maximum: 9.5 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind at surface: Calm
Winds aloft: Unobserved
Precipitation: Snowing at the rate of one centimetre per hour accumulation (S1)
Barometer and trend: 910 hPa and falling rapidly
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 4 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 77 cm
Foot penetration: 15 cm
Surface: Faceted fragments, New snow in damp clumps with well rounded crystals
Density of surface snow: not measured
Crust: not measured (below new snow)
Cloud ceiling: Ground
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

N.B. the below tree line hazard may increase if the daily warming is sufficient. The lower elevation snow pack is isothermal and may react to a slight increase in temperature especially on steep solar radiation effected slopes (even through cloud cover the sun has an affect).

Travel Advisory:
Poor visibility may hamper travel aspirations although the warming yesterday has done much to reduce the ski-penetration. The lower elevation height of new snow may be significantly greater with elevation as this precipitation event started yesterday evening as rain in the valley bottom.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 18th February 2007, 10:06am
Weather conditions: Snow and mist.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A misty and snowy morning in Nozawa this morning. Light rain and snow fell last night. Accordingly, the snow in the lower reaches of the resort will be wet and heavy but by all accounts at the top of the resort the snow is still fine. Temperatures are quite spring like with +1C currently on Yamabiko, so expect some thawing today. Uenotaira is slightly colder at -3C. Base depths are 180cm at the top and 130cm at Uenotaira. Visibility is poor across most of the mountain.

The outlook is for light snow and/or showers to fall today and tomorrow morning, after which the weather should clear and remain so with light winds until at least Tuesday night.

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 18th February 2007, 10:27am
Weather conditions: Rain/sleet at town, snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a fine day, but it ended up being a bit more grey than blue. It was fairly mild though rising to around 5 degrees. Lots of people were out there enjoying the good conditions.

This morning is a bit of a wet one - with rain or wet snow falling around town level at the moment and apparently snow falling higher up at Kagura. Temperatures are set to rise to around +4 later this afternoon and for those rain/snow clouds clear up. There is a chance that more snow/sleet might be with us overnight though so lets hope for lower temperatures.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 18th February 2007, 11:37am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Clouds moved in yesterday and the snow was back with us overnight and there is probably 5cm or so of new snow overnight. It is still snowing in areas this morning, but fairly light and there is only a slight wind and there is also fairly good visibility. It is also not as cold as it has been and the temperature outside right now is -1 degrees.

It looks like the next few days may well bring some fine weather to the region.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 18th February 2007, 12:14pm
Weather conditions: grey sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Grey sky today - a lot of low cloud, it started raining a bit last night in the village - but there was snow up top. A touch of wet snow this morning also, but it has now turned in to snow. Nothing to write home to Uncle Bob about though - it isn't exactly dumping.

Naeba is shrouded in cloud - expect to see nothing on the big hill today - Asagai is fine though. Great powder reports coming back from Kagura last night... comments like 'the best yet!' where heard around the village last night.   Read more ...
