Hakuba Now!

Thursday 18th December 2008, 8:28am
Weather conditions: High Cloud.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
High cloud today obscuring the mountains above 1800m but visibility on the skifields is fine. Light breezes from the South/Southwest and the forecast is for rain later turning to snow as it cools.

Zero degrees at the top of Goryu this morning with our weather station measuring -3.7 at Happo-ike and its currently 0.5 degrees in the valley.

Still not a lot of snow on the weekly forecast unfortunately.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 18th December 2008, 8:57am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun in places
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another cloudy start to the day, though blue sky on view as well in places.

The forecast yesterday turned out wrong. Tempertures rose to around 12 degrees in the afternoon and in the evening and overnight it stayed dry (as far as I can tell) and it was colder than it was supposed to get.

Around 3 degrees just before and colder than yesterday. Rain forecast again for later today but probably cold enough for that to be snow at Kagura and hopefully lower too.

Looking at the forecast, well it seems like some decent snowfall might be lined up for around Tuesday of next week. A good 3 day snow storm would be just the ticket!   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Thursday 18th December 2008, 9:04am
Weather conditions: Fog in the valleys
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Some rain did move through the region yesterday and into the early hours of this morning. In high traffic areas on the very lowest slopes the damage is noticeable but overall it's not too bad. Snow is expected to move in later today and through tomorrow.
The weekend is looking like the base of the mountain will be near the layer where there will be a snow/sleet/rain mix. I'm hoping it will be mostly snow but it will be fairly wet, stay high and it should still be good. From Monday the temperatures will move back well into minus figures and stay there for the whole of next week at least, with some good snowfalls forecast leading up to xmas.

Naeba Now!

Thursday 18th December 2008, 9:58am
Weather conditions: Sunny, becoming cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We had a little bit of rain just after sunset yesterday, a contrast to this mornings bright sunshine. Though we do have a fair amount of cloud looming in from the Kagura direction which is also the direction of where the light breeze is coming from. A sure sign of the light snow forecast for this afternoon. The temperature is around 4 degrees above zero.

Both Kagura and Naeba are reporting open terrain parks with a few box's and rails for the customers to hurt themselves on - should they so wish.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 18th December 2008, 10:14am
Weather conditions: High cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful clear morning here in Nozawa with only a little high cloud. Nothing came of the expected precipitation yesterday and there is still 45cm of snow on Yamabiko and 40cm on Uenodaira. It is currently 2 degrees in the village and 0 degrees up on the mountain.

The weather is predicted to close in again this afternoon bringing some precipitation to the area which should fall as snow on the higher slopes. The real hope, however, is a system expected to arrive Sunday night and deliver some much needed falls right down to the village. Hopefully this will allow some more of the resort to open up in time for the holidays.

Courses open:
Yamabiko A- 1300m
Yamabiko C - 850m
Yamabiko D - 1250
Uenodaira - 2000m

Lifts operating:
Nagasaka Gondola
Yamabiko Four lift
Yamabiko No2 Four lift
Uenodaira Four lift   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: Partly cloudy, mostly sunny,
New snowfall: --

Warm, Sun, Clouds, some Rain, but Kitanomine OPEN

Unfortunately, it has warmed up again here in Furano. The low temp last night was a miserable 3 C, and the high today will be 4 C. It was 5 C yesterday, and there was some rain overnight.

So there has been some damage to the base, particularly in Kitanomine, which is starting to have brown spots again. Some snow is forecast for tonight, nothing on Friday, and then snow is forecast EVERY DAY from Saturday to Wednesday. So my fingers are completely crossed for that to come true.

The Big News today is that the Kitanomine side is OPEN! Yeah. OK, it's on a limited basis, with the skiing taking place on top, and only one run down to the bottom, but it's a good sign nonetheless. We'll take it!

Think more snow, and think cold temps.   Read more ...
