Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 17th March 2008, 8:30am
Weather conditions: Sun, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The spring-like weather continues. Blue skies once again this morning. A few wispy clouds around, but they look likely to soon disappear as we are set for another day of sun and similar conditions out on the slopes.

It is a little colder than it has been this morning, but temperatures around the region are all either just below or above the zero mark as this report is being written.

Still a lot of snow on the slopes though and still a long way to go....... would be great if we could have a top-up though! Unfortunately that still looks unlikely until at least the weekend.

Nighta at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen tonight:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond   Read more ...

Backcountry Advisory
With continuing warm temperatures predicted this week be wary of wet slides and large glide cracks (crevasse) opening up, especially on convex rolls.

Hakuba Now!

Monday 17th March 2008, 9:04am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
3 degrees at 8:15 and currently 4.5 degrees in the shade at 860m. This morning saw low cloud in the valley and this is still hanging down to around 1500m so visibility on the top may be limited though there are some big patches of blue. No real winds to speak of. No precipitation and warm temperatures forecast through this week which will hammer the snow-banks in the valley which have shrunken in size over the last week.

Backcountry travel advisory:

Temperatures are mild and hovering >0 at 1500 m. Solar radiation will be moderate to strong on the south slopes today. The thing to keep an eye on are those heavy south faces that are waiting to come down with increased solar radiation, sharp temperature rises and or rain on the slopes. It is especially important to time traverses under South slopes early in the day or on days of cool temperatures. North Faces high in the alpine have not been receiving the same solar radiation and snow temps are still cool. Be careful of intense wind loading on the Northern aspects high in the Alpine from yesterdays wind event at ridge top. Cornices are big and will come down with the heat.

Avalanche danger will increased with any intense warming or rain. Watch solar radiated slopes, around rocks and cornices as they warm through the day.

Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before...

It's another fine warm day in Nozawa. There is a bit of cloud hanging around up top, but that looks like it starting to burn off, and it should be a very similar day to what we have had for the last week.

There is no snow in the forecast for the next week. The resort plans to keep as many of the runs open as snow permits until April 1st, when it will be limited to just the top.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Monday 17th March 2008, 11:28am
Weather conditions: overcast, bright, slight drizzle

No rain yesterday was a bonus. The snow pack is soft, but a consistent cover. The entire mountain (except Kuma Otoshi) is open with good to top to bottom skiing.

Tonight is the fireworks at the New Prince Hotel.

We are getting freeze-thaw conditions still, so early runs are harder and faster in the morning.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Monday 17th March 2008, 16:49pm
Weather conditions: Blue Skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday I discovered a whole new meaning to the term 'Snow Bums' (which usually implies a lazy person who does nothing but ski or snowboard everyday) the new meaning describes the shape of the back of the jump after a busy day in the park - warm weather coupled with the incessant battering from landing jumpers creates a dangerous groove on the back part of the jump - so yesterday Asagai Snowboard park was full of big white snow bums.

Same again today with the warm weather. Really bright out there on the slopes. Usual lift operations at Naeba although we're back to only having Dai Ni Gondola running today so no top of the mountain access at the moment.   Read more ...
