Weather conditions: Sunshine, some high cloud.

Yesterday was a bit of a mixed bag. Some sunshine early on then snow showers and quite heavy falls for a time. Probably had around 5cms fall yesterday but only a dusting overnight.

Today has dawned with sunshine and some high cloud. This morning the visibility is good and the winds generally light. During the day the wind will increase and some cloud cover should build up. Snow showers are forecast for this afternoon and through tomorrow.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 17th March 2007, 9:02am
Weather conditions: Light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A snowy start to the day here in Nozawa and it looks like more snow is on its way! Yesterday was another great day on the mountain with light snow-fall and patches of sunshine alternating all day. The snow conditions have held out very well; the quality at the top is excellent and there is plenty of it. The base depths on the mountain are 190cm at Yamabiko and 145cm at Uenotaira. The bottoms runs remain closed but the connecting lifts from Karasawa and Nagasaka taking you to the Nagasaka gondola and the hikage gellede remain open. Top to bottom skiing is still possible.

The outlook is good with non-stop snow-fall predicted for the next three days. Monday will have moderately heavy snow with more than 20cm expected.

Naeba Now!

Saturday 17th March 2007, 9:03am
Weather conditions: White Sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's -4 down here in the village with a white sky, and it's snowing with a gentle breeze and only 3 cm of snow on the ground, but it's the really fluffy big flake variety. I'm guessing there's a good bit more at the top of the mountain. Kagura are reporting powder snow, and if yesterday was anything to go by, with the top 2 man lift open - powder snow it will be.

The top 2 man lift opening this week has provided easy access to stacks of the white stuff, Stacks of it. Fresh lines, 'Christmas tree' tree runs, wind lips, small bowls, drop-offs and then of course down in to grooved out gnarly tracks at the bottom where all the tracks meet. Some people whinge about the bottom section of tracked out snow in the valley, personally (oh dear I'm voicing my opinion) I like it, it's challenging, and pushes up your skill level, as you root out every little manoeuvre, wiggle and jump available, kind of like funky cross-country moguls - Chuck a 180 in here or there..... and then maybe wish you had never bought that silly old fish tail! (joke!)

Anyway, get up there, its good. All of it, Naeba, Kagura, Mitsumata. Everywhere seems to be really accessible this year, and mind the trees - they hurt.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 17th March 2007, 10:14am
Weather conditions: Clear and sunny with a few scattered clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well, not the snow they forecasted, only a few flakes falling from time to time at the moment. Still more snow in the forecast for the next 24hrs with winds expected to increase this afternoon and temperatures not going above 1 deg. C. The weekend crowds have mellowed a bit lately and there are no more long lift lines or full parking lots. On week days, it's like being on your own private ski resort. So for those of you lucky enough, get out there and enjoy it while the snow is still good!

Our trained avalanche forecaster and weather guru is still out and his absence has been extended to the 18th of March, so the in-depth weather observations from Hirakawa Study Plot are put on hold til then.

Todays's Avalanche Hazard follows....play safe out there powderhounds!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: moderate

Below tree line: Low

N.B. As was noted previously: these hazard levels will likely increase with the daytime warming

Travel Advisory:

With today's sun affected slopes there may be south facing areas of failure once the snow gets melting and more moisture laden. Also caution should be taken in lee side wind loaded slopes where a deep wind packed snowpack is present. Areas of tension around rocks and convex rolls should also be avoided. Gullies and steeper aspects could still be potential areas of danger as there still is quite a bit of fresh snow sitting atop some crust layers.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Saturday 17th March 2007, 10:23am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As forecast the snow is falling once again in Minakami, predominently in upper Minakami. Houdaigi and Tenjindaira are getting a good covering to add to the big dumps of earlier in the week.

It now looks like the snow will continue through to tomorrow afternoon with the remainder of the week looking like clear cool weather with some possible snow around Tenjindaira.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 17th March 2007, 14:49pm
Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was another cold morning early on and the snow has been coming down since then - not a large amount accumulated at town level but the slopes will be getting another topup to keep those conditions good. Only a slight wind this afternoon and about 0 degrees at the moment. We have snow lined up for all of tomorrow as well at the moment with temperatures not set to rise above zero, so the good conditions continue...!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 17th March 2007, 15:55pm
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A bit of a late report today, sorry! It has been another snowy day here in Shiga Kogen. Not huge snowfall at all - more like a few cm on the roads and on top of cars. Just a slight wind and blustery winds at times but the temperatures are happily staying low so the winter-like conditions continue.

Snow clouds will probably be with us overnight and also into tomorrow as well.   Read more ...
