Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 16th March 2008, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies all around
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Blue skies all around this morning and the sun is out from early on. There was a bit of a strong wind blowing around earlier but that seems to have calmed down now and resort operations should be as normal today.

Sun all the way today, with a top temperature of around 10 degrees in Yuzawa - it is already 6 degrees out there, so very mild... and a similar outlook for tomorrow as well, with still no real snowfall on the weekly forecast.

So while there is still a lot of snow around, 'melting' continues and spring conditions out there.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 16th March 2008, 8:49am
Weather conditions: Sun, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a day of changeable weather yesterday with a bit of sleet and snow at times, it is another fine and sunny morning here in Shiga Kogen with bright blue skies out there from the early hours.

Even early on this morning most resort areas are posting temperatures above zero with some as mild as +4 degrees. Expect it to be a very mild - almost warm - day out there with fine sunny weather until the evening.... and more than likely there will be more of the same tomorrow as well.

Nighta at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen tonight:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 16th March 2008, 9:04am
Weather conditions: Blue Skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The rain from Friday caused all sorts of problems yesterday - it was rather like wriggling about on a surfboard inside a huge bowl of granulated sugar. That is to say that there didn't seem to be any ability to dig in the edges of your board or skis to get control of things during your descent, and then there was the afternoon which ended up being pretty scary, with what seemed like mountainous heaps of sugar everywhere, ready to throw you into some state of flailing armed, out-of-control hopefulness.

Another lovely day though today, the sun is out, there's a bit of a breeze and to my amazement they have actually opened the Dai Ichi Gondola today.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Sunday 16th March 2008, 9:09am
Weather conditions: overcast, fog covering upper mountain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another day of rain yesterday now makes 3 days of rain. The snow cover has suffered a lot. Yesterday I saw brown patches of dirt poking through the snow on the Kitanomine side. Ski Patrol were out marking them with orange hazard poles, so be careful of such obstacles today.

No more predipitation is forecast for the next week, which means the snow will stay how it is. They are freeze-thaw conditons overnight.

Expect hard packed conditions up high, and slushy wet snow down low.

Tomorrow night (17th) there are fireworks from 830pm.

Racing again on Spies course today.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Sunday 16th March 2008, 9:54am
Weather conditions: Cloudy with occasional snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The weather is not changing as we would like. There are overcast skies and it is still warm in the Village. It is colder on top today and light snow is forecast for this afternoon and tomorrow. The Patrol report that the out of bounds area is dangerous and gates will be shut. In spite of all this, there is plenty of snow on the mountain and skiing and boarding will be fun as the visibiltiy is good on the lower slopes, the wind is light and the rain has stopped. The clouds are high so if the sun comes out, the riding will be fun on the well groomed runs.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 16th March 2008, 10:36am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a very sloppy day on the bottom two thirds of the mountain. There was a layer of cloud at about Uenotaira level which burnt off in the early afternoon. Up on Yamabiko there was a thin layer of new but very heavy snow. The views were spectacular though. Yesterday big dirt patches were showing on Hachiman. One would have to think that Karasawa is not long for this season.

It's bluebird again today. It is a balmy 9 degrees up on Yamabiko. It reminds me of the middle of summer in Christchurch. Ignore the pointing and staring from the Japanese people and get out there in your t-shirt. Don't forget, it's 2008 and neon is IN!!!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 16th March 2008, 11:41am
Weather conditions: cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No rain or snow since yesterday. It is clody with no winds. The runs are compact on the top and slushy at the bottom. The visibility is good. The avalanche danger remains the same as yesterday

Backcountry travel advisory:

Temperatures are mild and hovering around 0 at 1500 m. Solar radiation will be moderate to strong on the south slopes today. The thing to keep an eye on are those heavy south faces that are waiting to come down with increased solar radiation, sharp temperature rises and or rain on the slopes. It is especially important to time traverses under South slopes early in the day or on days of cool temperatures. North Faces high in the alpine have not been receiving the same solar radiation and snow temps are still cool. Be careful of intense wind loading on the Northern aspects high in the Alpine from yesterdays wind event at ridge top. Cornices are big and will come down with the heat.

Avalanche danger will increased with any intense warming or rain. Watch solar radiated slopes, around rocks and cornices as they warm through the day.

Avalanche Danger:
