Snow and weather reports posted on Monday 1st May 2017

Morning from Yuzawa.
Some light snow on and off during the day yesterday and I can just about add 1cm to the report, but there is no fresh snow on the ground this morning.
And as expected it looks like it is going to be a lovely clear and sunny day... and a warm day. Perhaps alarmingly so if temperatures rise up to around 10C as local forecasts still say. Tomorrow is going to remain similarly warm with things getting colder on Saturday - hopefully with some fresh snow to start the weekend off.
We have enjoyed some very nice conditions and regular snowfall recently so perhaps can't complain too much about a warm blip. As long as it is just a blip and we get back to more winter-like weather quickly!
Anyway today should be a very feel-good day to be out on the mountains.
(I have to get out early to meet someone this morning, and so some of the snow depth numbers below are not updated for the day).

Clear and sunny
Hello from Nozawa.
It's going to be a fantastic day of clear skies today. Well, it sure looks that way.
A cold start to the morning but...
We've been seeing this on the forecast but it also will be warming up today and tomorrow, unseasonably so, so that's not great. Especially if we get some rain tomorrow. But it is also still looking likely that it'll get colder pretty quick with snow overnight Friday into Saturday so that fresh layer of snow in time for Saturday morning is still on the cards.
In the meantime, I am up for early lifts and early tracks. I wish you a fun day!
Lifts operations: - All lifts operating except - Yunomine pair (usually closed on weekdays) - Mizunashi triple (usually closed on weekdays) - Challenga pair (usually closed on weekdays) - Utopia pair (usually closed on weekdays)

Clear and sunny blue skies
Morning from Hakuba.
An easy report today and with everything most likely to be opening as planned it is time for an early report and some early tracks for me!
Lovely day yesterday with lots of sunshine and blue sky and some fine looking clouds hanging around too.
And this morning we have blue skies all around and it is a stunning start to the day. No clouds. It is actually really cold (colder here at base than higher up by the looks of reports), but we are still very much expecting the sun to warm things up considerably during the day. Local forecasts actually say it might warm up to +9C later on here in the village (!)
Tomorrow is still also forecast to be unseasonably mild but precipitation is due later in the day. Surely rain if it doesn't cool down quickly enough but snow still there on the forecast by the end of the day tomorrow and into Saturday and Sunday. So while the upcoming warmth should not be lasting much beyond late tomorrow and fresh snow is on the way.
For now it is a beautiful morning and I just can't wait to get myself on the lifts. Hope some of you can too.
I just have to decide where to go this morning... too many good choice. :)

No new snow to report this morning. Snow should return tonight, and quite a bit should fall over the day tomorrow. Winds are light right now, but will likely pick up to moderate by the afternoon. The heaviest snowfall in the forecast right now is for Monday PM, with over 30 cm in 24 hours predicted.
It should be fairly quiet this morning with the lack of new snow keeping all the extra people over in Niseko. Read more ...

Good morning from Niseko.
Yesterday it was something of a surprise to see the snow continuing to fall, wasn't quite expecting that and the clear up didn't really happen. I even have 4cm of snow to report (that's what is on my report today), though there is no further fresh snow to report overnight. I am hearing that there was around 10cm of snow and more further up on the mountain which is something of a relief... didn't get up there myself yesterday.
This morning we have overcast conditions and like what seems like lots of Japan it is going to get mild. Borderline warm, depending on how you look at it.
The forecast is looking quite promising for us to start getting snowed on properly from perhaps overnight tonight or tomorrow morning. Steady and regular snowfall is there on the forecast well into next week, so fingers crossed this turns out to be a decent delivery.
We need a complete and impressive reset.
It feels fairly calm early this morning but stronger winds are due to be blowing around later and might affect lifts. Resorts look set to be opening as normal at the start of the day though.
Have fun and stay safe.
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Mountain base: -5°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -6°, no new snow. Annupuri 1150m, -6°, SSW5-10m/s, poor visibility, no new snow. Hirafu 1250m, -7°, S10m/s, poor visibility, no new snow. Coastal data: Kamui Cape:SSW18m/s, 1014hPa, wave 1.6m.
The temperature is rising and a southerly wind is picking up as a low pressure system approaches. From observation the general avalanche risk is low but it will rise as the temperature increases today. The 15 Feb snowfall is not bonded well and will easily form loose avalanches 10-15cm thickness on steep slopes. There is a high possibility that this layer will become a weak layer in the future snowpack. Many accidents occur in bad weather. With strong winds and heavy snowfall, snowdrifts on previously safe slopes can develop rapidly into having unstable avalanche prone conditions. Best not to venture too far today. All gates are expected to be open but please listen to the patrols advice.
The inbounds snow is OK today. Go for a few runs this morning then hit the onsen before the bad weather hits this afternoon. Don't duck ropes, today is not the day to try and sneak out of bounds.

A beautiful start to the day here in Naeba.
Cold early on but it's going to warm up today, unseasonably so and warm temperatures also forecast for tomorrow. Hopefully we might be able to avoid rain before snow sets in again later on tomorrow and through the weekend and hopefully into next week.
In the meantime though, it's a stunner of a morning and I just want to get out there. Morning in particularly should be great.
Looks like there's some issues with the Number 4 lift this morning so it is not open as planned. Hopefully they'll be able to sort that out quickly.

Fine and calm
Good morning from Zao.
Just another dusting of snow to report this morning, and not enough for any cm on the report.
It's going to generally be fairly fine day weather wise and probably some harder conditions out there as we now wait on a nice fresh layer of snow. As with most of Japan it looks like, it's going to be a very mild day today and tomorrow too. Maybe some rain before that turns into snow, especially likely at base level.
We should be seeing fresh snow by Saturday, though it doesn't look like we can expect anything major just yet.
All lifts apart from the following appear to be operating today:
Paradise Number 3 pair Karamatsu pair
All courses apart from Kotan are open.
Official snow depths (as published by the resort itself): Summit - 125cm Paradise - 220cm Chuo - 220cm Utopia - 175cm Uwanodai - 130cm Yokokura - 160cm

Appi Kogen Now!
Thursday 16th February 2017, 10:06am
Good morning from Appi,
Cloudy skies and relatively warm temperatures today unfortunately. It’s only zero outside and may warm up a little more today. I’m just hoping the rain doesn’t come any time today.
50/50 sun and clouds today with the wind picking up late this afternoon which will stay with us over the weekend and into next week. Temperatures are going to plummet tomorrow into the minus double digit zone and stay that way until midweek. Tomorrow is teasing us with a lot of snowfall, perhaps 30cm worth. Fingers crossed it gets here in time for the weekend crowds.
The slopes are in good condition with a few iced over parts on the Sailer and Second run areas. Light crowds haven’t destroyed them just yet and I’m sure the groomers will be in full operation again by Friday night. I’m not sure if its a money saving thing here but they tend not to groom all the runs during the week which seems a little bizarre.
Anyway if you’re coming have a good time up there.
Planned operating lifts at time of report (subject to change due to weather conditions):
