Minakami Now!

Saturday 16th February 2008, 8:07am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing at 2cm/hour
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the sun came out for 2 hours during the middle of the day. A brief reprieve from the huge storm of late. This sunny spell did not last for long as the snow set in once again late evening.

This morning the snow is coming down nicely once again, with a current rate of 3cm/hour and 35cm of fresh snow on the ground. The wind is not noticeable at the valley level but moderate at some of the higher resorts, but not enough to stop lifts.

The outlook for today is for snow for the entire day with the weather clearing later this evening and cloud and snow for tomorrow.

Backcountry Advisory
The new snow is not bonding well with the sun crust layer from Monday, creating sluffs varying from 50cm-70cm deep on steeper terrain. Caution is advised in large steep and exposed terrain. Be careful of terrain traps.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 16th February 2008, 9:02am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yet more phenomenal dumpage to report in Nozawa Onsen. It snowed for most of the day yesterday and then got really silly in the evening. It was going hard this morning and the resort is reporting an amazing 55cm of new snow. 5 days ago we could see a tree and a few houses out of our back window, they are a distant memory now as almost 2 metres of snow has completely blocked any vision. However, I must admit that I quite prefer the current view.

About 30 minutes ago the snow stopped and some blue sky even opened up. Those lucky enough to be first down skyline and onto the blacks, or Challenge and Schneider on the Hikage side will undoubtably be treated to a minute of pure bliss unlikely to be rivaled in this lifetime. Lift lines should be somewhat better than last weekend, but we should probably expect a busy resort once again.

We are expecting more heavy snow from this afternoon and through tomorrow. The weekend crowds usually cut into snow depths a little, but hopefully we can see the base crawl up to 3.7 metres on Yamabiko, making 2007/2008 an officially 'average' season for Nozawa Onsen.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Saturday 16th February 2008, 10:20am
Weather conditions: Cloudy but bright with long sunny spells
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More snow to report this morning. It's also nice and sunny this morning a perfect environment for those who bother to get themselves up there. Days like this can go down in to the personal record books of top 10 days in the powder snow.

It's -5 in the village and quite breezy early on. The snow dump has thrown down another 30cm to our feet since yesterdays ramblings. All good and it looks like there should be more on the way this weekend, with heavy snow down in the Yuzawa town area.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Saturday 16th February 2008, 10:22am
Weather conditions: Overcast, snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a treat. Once again the hill was covered in deep, light powder that seemed almost bottomless in areas. Everyone was all smiles across the hill despite some hefty lift queues in the morning. Today looks like it could be even better, however a lot of cars were driving into town this morning so it would be prudent to get out early and enjoy the freshly fallen snow before the powder monster chews it all up. The official report only states 5-10cm of fresh snow but the avalanche report notes 30cm of new snowfall. Go figure...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 16th February 2008, 10:27am
Weather conditions: Snow, clearing up, sun! Changeable early on!
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Apologies for the lack of report yesterday - technical problems prevented the report from being posted.

After the snow of the last few days, this morning there are variable conditions in SHiga Kogen. Snow falling in some areas earlier on, but some blue skies also visible among the clouds in Maruike and other parts right now. It looks like it could well turn into a fine day.

Yokoteyama is now reporting 225cm or snow with Yakebitaiyama on 200cm... those numbers have continued to rise over the last few days. The fresh snow conditions out there mean that it should be a fantastic day out on the mountains, especially if the weather keeps fine.

Temperatures remain low and mid-winter like, with -12.5C at Kumanoyu and -12C at Yakebitaiyama.

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Sun Valley
- Maruike
- Mammoth
- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama
- Kumanoyu

>> Please note that tomorrows report will be posted in the evening.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Saturday 16th February 2008, 10:36am
Weather conditions: moderate winds, light snowfall, fresh snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another 24hours of snow and conditions are dry, fast, soft powder snow. Temperatures are not too cold and the storm of the last week which has bought strong winds has moved past us.

Yesterdays the mountain was in top condition, not a lot of customers, lots of fresh snow, deep to the knees. We are expecting snow all through the weekend.

Tonight is the Saturday cultural night in town.

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 16th February 2008, 10:38am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
When I first looked out of the window this morning it was snowing heavier than it has this season so far. It's taking a bit of a break at the moment, with the mountains fairly visible, but the snow looks set to continue for the day.

There was about 25cm or so on the top of my car since late last night and those snow depths at some resorts have jumped up a bit more.... Kandatsu is now reporting 330cm. Things are good!

The temperature at the moment is around -3 degrees and don't expect it to rise above that much. There's not much of a wind down in the town this morning and it doesn't look like the weather conditions are affecting operations at resorts around town.

For those hoping for a clear and sunny Sunday it looks like that isn't going to happen as the snow is forecast to continue all through tomorrow as well and even possibly into Monday.

Peak conditions? I would say so!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 16th February 2008, 11:05am
Weather conditions: Sun/Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another great day in Hakuba today. Some new snow last night and nice cold temperatures this morning with -5 in the valley and -9 on top with blue skies and some sunlight poking through the high cloud cover will make for a great day on the mountains today. Temperatures in the minus tens at altitude today with more snow forecast especially tonight...some long gondola and lift lines today being Saturday but the waits will be worth it.

Avalanche Danger Scale and Advisory:

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Tree Line: Considerable

Alpine: High

High amounts of steady wind and snow Tuesday night has increased the likelyhood of natural and skier triggered avalanches. Wind transport of snow (cornices and snow drifts) is present and frequent in both south and north faces. Sluffing on steeper terrain is still a possibility so avoid passing under chutes/avalanche paths. Expect an update on how the new snow is bonding along with stability in the older snow pack soon.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Saturday 16th February 2008, 11:11am
Weather conditions: Snowing (1cm per hour) with sunny patches
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It just doesn't want to stop snowing. Seki Onsen is now at the 475cm mark and rising. Thousands of smiling faces out at Suginohara toay. The sun has been out at Akakura Kanko for most of the morning, but the big snows of the past few days are coming back this afternoon. Innkeepers are exhausted from plowing, and the town plows can't seem to keep up with the rate of accumulation.

Today's pick is definitely Akakura Kanko Resort. They've got unprecedented levels of powder, lax off-piste rules, and sunshine this morning to boot.

Your Myoko area levels for today:
350cm (Akakura Kanko Resort);
375cm (Akakura Onsen);
280cm (Ikenotaira);
425cm on top, 260cm on the bottom (Suginohara);
385cm (Kyukamura);
260cm (Pine Valley);
475cm (Seki Onsen)!!!;
210cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
245cm (Madarao Sympathique);
240cm (Madarao Kogen);
375cm (Myoko Ski Park);
180cm (Togakushi);
200cm (Kurohime);
175cm (Iizuna);
180cm (Iizuna Kogen)
