Another crisp one this morning with Goryu measuring -3 degrees at the top at 6AM and the mercury sitting at -2 in the valley right now.

Beautiful clear sky and amazing views of the mountains today with temperatures in the valley forecast to push up around 9 degrees means another great day for catching some groomers and some mountain air.

Weather conditions: Blue skies, sun

More of the same this morning - the sun is out once again and the temperature is set to rise to around 9 degrees today.

It almost feels more like mid-November than it does mid-December.

With no new snow to report, Gala are having to delay opening once again and as with other resorts now are just waiting for the snow to get things started. Taking a look at the forecast it looks like we can hopefully expect some snow on Thursday, so we've just got hold tight and hope....   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Weather conditions: Clear blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Clear skies last night have created a cold morning at the valley level today with a thick frost covering the ground. It seems that the colder temperatures have finally started to take over as we head for an expected high today of 6 deg C.

Over last weekend the upper mountains received a dusting of snow on Sunday with Tenjin receiving around 10cm. Tenjin has base of around 50cm with all but one lift operating, but there are still a lot of patches of grass to be seen.

Tomorrow sees some precipitation coming in from the evening which will bring snow above 1000m. The rest of the week is looking relatively warm again.

The latest report from the Japan Met. Agency now predicts the cold will not hit until around Christmas. Let's hope it is a white xmas!

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 16th December 2008, 9:21am
Weather conditions: A little cloud and very light snow falling
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The system bringing the snow over the last few days has moved on but it did go out with a bang dumping 20-30cm through yesterday and last night. Today has not exactly dawned with bluebird conditions as was forecast but it is a lot clearer than it was and the summit of Youtei was almost visible earlier.

A high pressure system has ridged out from China and is passing through Honshu today. As it moves to the west it will direct a mild southerly airstream over us and later today we should see temps getting slightly above freezing for the first time in many days. Tomorrow we are still expecting a little rain which should turn to snow into Thursday. At least we now have a very good base which shouldn't be too badly affected by the rain.

So today will be the last chance to enjoy the powder for at least a couple of days so make sure you get out there!

Myoko Now!

Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is still out, but the thermometer isn't rising. That's good news, as clouds are expected in with snow on Thursday onwards. It's been a hard opening week with this volatile weather. The resorts are getting an earful of phone calls asking "are you open"? Time to start the snow dance. Eyes and ears this week.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 16th December 2008, 9:59am
Weather conditions: Sunny, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Same as yesterday, stunningly blue skies this morning, and that's without the contrast of white snow. Yesterday afternoon still boasted snow on the ground at 900 meters, whilst this morning most of this lower altitude snow has thawed.

Up on the main hill things are still looking good and the drop from the top of Gondola No 2 still looks workable with access through to the lower slopes still available.

Definitely a warmer feel in the air today although the temperature is actually reading the same as yesterday for the moment - hovering a couple below zero.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 16th December 2008, 10:17am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another beautiful day here in Nozawa Onsen. It didn't get too warm yesterday so not much melting up on Yamabiko and Uenodaira. It should be a good firm surface for riding today, with not too much ice. The recent snowfalls have come just in time to keep the cover going.

The current clear conditions are predicted to continue until Thursday. There is now 45cm of snow up on Yamabiko and 40cm on Uenodaira. Currently it is 0 degrees in the village and -4 degrees up on the hill.

We are still in need of quite a bit more snow before the lower slopes will be opened, but conditions are great for enjoying some turns in the sunshine today.

Courses open:
Yamabiko A- 1300m
Yamabiko C - 850m
Yamabiko D - 1250
Uenodaira - 2000m

Lifts operating:
Nagasaka Gondola
Yamabiko Four lift
Yamabiko No2 Four lift
Uenodaira Four lift   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Tuesday 16th December 2008, 11:59am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, sun breaking through.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Semi-Bluebird Day in Furano.

There was about 10 cm of super fluffy snow overnight. It's almost impossible to pack the stuff down.

Broken high clouds, with the sun poking through. It's a beautiful day for skiing.

The Kitanomine side is STILL closed. Ah, the Prince Hotels do things in their own way.

Unfortunately, temps will warm up a bit for a few days. Not great news. Hopefully it will be the last time until spring.

Think snow.
