Niseko Now!

Saturday 16th December 2006, 8:34am
Weather conditions: Cloudy and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Finally some fresh snow has fallen overnight and it's currently snowing moderately. The snow should continue through the morning and ease during the afternoon. It should snow lightly for the next few days but nothing that significant. At this stage next Thursday is looking good for some heavier falls but this early on the forecast could change.
After last year it may seem a very slow start to the season but in reality we have about average depth currently. The average depth up high by the end of Dec is about 2m and we seem to be right on track to reach this.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Saturday 16th December 2006, 8:39am
Weather conditions: Snowing.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is some fairly heavy snowfall this morning, it started about an hour ago and I really hope it continues as yesterday turned very cold and all the heavy, wet snow became compacted and icy. The streets were getting pretty hazardous and the slopes were getting pretty uncomfortable.

Today the resort plans to open the Kitanomine Gondola which will give access to the very top of Kitanomine zone and open up some of the highest courses on the mountain, should be a great day for finding some powder stashes again. The snow hasn't been affected by the warmer weather at that height.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 16th December 2006, 8:55am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a fine bright start to the day here in Yuzawa and it is likely to be another mild day - maybe temperatures as high as 11 degrees in Yuzawa town. The latest news on the upcoming snow? Tomorrow will probably be colder than today and snow looks set to arrive tomorrow evening/night and there will probably also be snow on Monday.

Choice for the weekend is Kagura or Naeba, with Kagura offering by far the most sliding space.

Naeba Now!

Saturday 16th December 2006, 9:11am
Weather conditions: Crystal clear blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Beautiful blue sky today! Hats on, its quite cold too! a nice minus 1 up here at 900 metres (8:30am), a very frosty ground too. Sure to get warmer as the day progresses though. Gondola #2 is open again providing that near top to bottom run, check the pictures.

Tashiro Ropeway is also opening up today for the season - so now the two ropeways servicing Kagura are now open (Tashiro and Mitsumata).

There also seems to be a lot of weekend traffic rolling down the road into Naeba which will be good to get things moving for the season. Lets hope they are all up to their knees in fresh snow before they leave! Oh and the oh so lovely Japanese resort mountain music is drifting accross the village, it must be winter time.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 16th December 2006, 9:19am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a bright blue sky sunny morning in Shiga Kogen from early on. In mid-winter we would be very happy to report that, but....

Anyway, if you are in the area today you'll be treated to some fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.

Hopefully you'll enjoy the skiing and snowboarding too. Here's a run down of the resort areas that have at least some of their slopes open. The numbers in brackets are the number of lifts operating in those areas):

Sun Valley (1)
Maruike (1)
Shiga Kogen Ropeway (1)
Bundadaira (2)
Mammoth (2)
Higashidateyama (upper part) (1)
Ichinose Family/Diamond (3)
Yakebitaiyama (3)
Okushiga Kogen (1)
Kumanoyu (4)
Yokoteyama (3)

Snow is still thin on the ground and most of the resorts are not linked up yet, so it's very patchy - but there's still fun to be had out there.

Pray for snow! (Which is hopefully due to be with us by the end of tomorrow...)   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 16th December 2006, 9:22am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Similiar conditions today with low lying cloud in the village but the Cameras up the top are showing a bright sunny day. Lots more people about today and some eager skiers and boarders heading up the mountain this morning.
Talked to some people yesterday who said they had some fun on the groomed runs up at Yamabiko.
Snow still predicted for the next few days so lets hope for a good dump.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Saturday 16th December 2006, 15:32pm
Weather conditions: Slightly cloudy.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another beautiful sunny day in Minakami today with warm temperatures of around 10 deg C at midday. It definately doesn't feel like winter and is a huge contrast to the 200cm that were on the ground this time last year.

The snow is still forecast to be hitting tomorrow, most probably in the evening, and then continue on throughout Monday. The remainder of the week is forecast for relatively cold temperatures and more precipitation, so let's hope for more snow!

Houdaigi is on standby, and will open after the next decent snowfall. Tenjin is down to a 30cm base now after the last few days of warm weather, but remains open.

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 16th December 2006, 19:28pm
Weather conditions: Broken clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
1 meter of new snow... would have made it a really incredible day up on the resorts today, but according to the BC enthusiasts it was actually great knee deep powder up in the Alpine, so if you are willing to hike a bit...

On the resorts it was a balmy 5 deg.C and fairly good snow softned up by the warm weather. We should see the temperatures drop drastically overnight and through tomorrow however and are expecting moderate snow flurries Sunday and part of Monday.

Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47, Tsugaike and Happo are all open today with minimal lift operation. Hakuba Cortina, Hakuba Norikura, Hakuba Iwatake and Hakuba San Alpina are all on standby and will open when snow conditions allow.

AVALANCHE ADVISARY: MODERATE

Watch for cornices and loaded lee slopes that were created last week getting heavy with added snow fall and warmer weather. The warmer weather should, however, help to solidify the pack in the alpine and create a good bond with the ground cover.   Read more ...
