Lots of cloud
Good morning from Yuzawa.
It's another Monday morning and from today just GALA Yuzawa (most of the Central Area and part of the North Area) and Kagura (pretty much all of it) in the area remain open.
As for the weather, the roads are wet and the rain clouds are still lingering but hopefully it will dry up during the day and we may even enjoy clearer skies and some sunshine later on. Temps forecast to rise to around 10C in town.
The Kagura resort this morning is actually reporting a slight dusting of snow overnight and a temperature of -1 as of 7am. (GALA Yuzawa were officially reporting rain as of 5:40am).
Yuzawa Now reports will continue to be posted daily until 6th May

Appi Kogen Now!
Monday 16th April 2018, 7:40am
Morning from Appi.
Lots of cloud around this morning with the chance of a few spots of rain. It's keeping relatively cold at the moment with temps forecast to start rising once again as the week progresses. But not alarmingly so. The forecast appears to be a mix of cloud, bit of sun and more rain (around Wednesday).
Still 5 lifts operating with the resort planning on being open until 6th May.
Official snow depth:
Planned lift operations (subject to change):
- APPI Gondola - Central number 1 lift - Central number 2 lift - Central number 3A lift - Central number 4 lift

Geto Kogen Now!
Monday 16th April 2018, 7:41am
Good morning from Geto.
Unfortunately the rain continued yesterday making it not the best weather for a weekend!
This morning a slight improvement - sleet. But there's some strong winds blowing about as well.
The forecast for the day is cloud so hopefully conditions will calm down...
Official snow depths:
Top: 310cm Base: 185cm
Number 1 Gondola and Number 1 pair lift are operating
Just the top area of the ski resort now remains open - with the Yamabiko, Kokenashi and Bunabayashi (to mid station) courses still available. You now need to take the Gondola back down to base. As for lifts, the Nagasaka Gondola and two top Yamabiko lifts are operating.
I see the resort are actually reporting 5cm of snow on the top Yamabiko area (and a temp of -1C), so that may well be worth a special trip to investigate. Always a bonus to get any kind of fresh snow in the middle of April. It's foggy up there though early on so go prepared.
Rain is falling to the north of Nozawa at the moment but not here. Might well get some spots though clearer skies are forecast for the day.
Snow down at base areas has almost all disappeared and you'll now be seeing farmers getting busy. Things will start getting warmer once again from mid-week onwards.
Monday 16th April 2018
Fresh snowfall since yesterday as reported by the resort:
- Nagasaka Gondola - Yamabiko Four - Yamabiko Number 2 Four
The following courses should be open today:
- Yamabiko - Kokenashi - Bunabayashi (to mid station) - Get the Gondola back down to base
General resort operations information until Sunday 6th May:
The Gondola will be open from 8:10am daily; The Number 1 car park will be free daily; There will be no village shuttle bus between until 27th April; Nozawa Onsen plans to remain open until Sunday 6th May. Read more ...

Mostly clear blue skies, some cloud
Good morning to you all from Niseko.
No fresh cm of snow to report though it does seem that there was some mush overnight down here by my secret base, but I am tempted to check how conditions might be up top.
The day should be much nicer today though with clouds clearing, mostly blue skies and sunshine.
We are down to three operating lifts each at both Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Annupuri from this morning, but there's still very good snow cover on the mountain. Both of the open resort areas are still reporting 4m of snow which is pretty wild for the middle of April, I believe. Deep, you could say! ;)
All of the lifts should be moving too as there doesn't seem to be much of a wind this morning. It is keeping chilled and so it should be fun, in a spring kind of way.
Temperatures are set to rise starting from tomorrow.
Monday 16th April 2018
Resort specific information (operations subject to change):
- Ace Number 2 Center Four (* operating daily until 6th May) - King Number 3 (* operating daily until 6th May) - King Number 4 (* operating daily until 6th May) - Hirafu Gondola (* operating only on 21st, 22nd April & 28th April - 6th May)
- Most of Hirafu remains open - Lower part of Super closed - All of the Hanazono area is closed
It's actually quite cold this morning! And some fresh snow on the ground too! Much nicer than the rain yesterday, that's for sure.
Still, with other ski resorts in other areas announcing that they can't quite remain open as long as they originally planned (of course, unrelated to Shiga Kogen), there is always the chance that we might well have similar news here too. We shall see.
Update: actually, I already have a bit of lift news. Kumanoyu have announced that their Number 1 pair will be operating until 22nd April, rather than the original plan to go through until Golden Week.
I will try my best to keep on top of other such news - the resort specific information below has been updated this morning.
Next update before the weekend.
Temperatures are forecast to rise somewhat in the second half of the week and into the weekend with a run of sunny days also due.
The section of Route 292 between Shiga Kogen and Kusatsu is still closed - planned re-opening is at 10am on Friday 20th April.

It was not the nicest of days yesterday with rain and wind and some lift/resort closures affecting folk who wanted to be out in those conditions...
This morning there is a lot to report, so I will get straight to it:
At Happo-one, the lower courses are now all closed and you need to take the Gondola back down to base. Same over at Tsugaike Kogen. At Hakuba Goryu you can still ride back down to the Gondola base using the Toomi course, though snow is getting rather thin on the ground there. Almost all of 47 remains open - a bit of walking is required on the lower part of the R-7 detour course. I think that about covers it.
I'm happy to be able to report a much nicer start to the day today. A relatively cold start, light winds, lots of cloud but increasing amounts of blue sky. It should be a nice day and temps are set to rise to around 11C in the village.
Will they all be able to remain open until 6th May? I'll keep you updated every day until then!
Planned ski resort operations on Monday 16th April 2018:
We are checking the below information every morning, but please note that resort operations are beyond our control and subject to change.
- Gondola - Alpen quad - Usagidaira pair (* open only on weekends/holidays) - Panorama pair - Grat quad - Kurobishi Number 3 pair - Kurobishi Number 2 quad - Skyline Number 2 pair - Kokusai Number 3 pair (* open only on weekends/holidays)
- Gondola - Alps Number 1 pair - Alps Number 3 pair - Alps Number 2/4 pair (* open only from 28th April until 6th May)
- The top area (except Champion Expert) remains open - You can still ride back down to Gondola base on the Toomi course - getting rather narrow! - The Toomi lift is now closed - The Iimori lifts and area are now closed
- Gondola - Pair Line A-B - Quad Line C - Pair Line E
- Almost all course areas remain open - Restrictions on the lower part of R-7 (with a bit of walking required) - The resort recommends that beginners take the Gondola back down to base - The Tree Riding Zones are now closed for the season
- Gondola - Han-no-ki high speed pair - Tsugaike Ropeway
- Only the top Tsuga-no-mori and Han-kou courses remain open - You can no longer ride back down to base areas - all base areas now closed - Take the Gondola back down to base - The Tsugaike Ropeway plans to be open daily until 6th May - The Ropeway is open only for hiking and climbing; a special form must be submitted
Yesterday saw strong winds and some snow interfere with lift operations.
Today is back to good weather and we have nice clear blue sky over the resort. It is a warm morning at +6c, but there is a light to moderate wind that is cool, and that will make the skiing a lot more pleasant.
Although only the Furano Zone is open now, there is still great snow from the top to the bottom as we enter the final part of the season. The target closing date for the Furano Zone is 6 May! Read more ...
