Niseko Now!

Monday 15th January 2007, 8:44am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
.....and it keeps coming!!!

Big flakes are currently falling from the sky, with a slight dusting overnight, it's coming in thick and fast.

Yesterday's riding was amazing, with up to waist deep to be found just off-piste, you didn't have to go looking for it, it came to you.

The snow is likely to keep falling and the conditions are going to remain great.

Afternoon update:

There has been the occasional snow flurry today but nothing of significance has fallen. Although it is calm here in the village it is gusty up high. The Ace #4 and the King #4 were both closed today around 1pm because of high winds.

Over the next few days as a high pressure system begins to move over Hokkaido we can expect only light snowfalls and calmer wind conditions.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Monday 15th January 2007, 9:18am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow falling this morning with 3cm of fresh snow settled. There is still a moderate breeze continuing from the North but the visibility is reasonable at most ski areas and should be improving during the day.

The forecast for today is clearing weather with relatively cold temperatures for the next few days and more snow expected on Wednesday and Friday.

The big news from Minakami is the opening of the "Kakko" course (return cat track) at Tenjin which has not been open in mid season since Winter 2004/5. This opens up a huge amount of opportunites, especially for backcountry riders.

The most popuular BC run (also the run with the highest danger), avalanche alley, has not quite filled in enough to cover the creek at the bottom but it is only about 50cm away. The other main area "Gassex" is now rideable with most of the smaller trees covered and multiple exit points over the creek to the cat track.

Two reasonable sized avalanches (size 2.5) were witnessed on the South faces of Tanigawadake (running into avalanche alley) and on the "White Valley" run withinj the past 5 days. With the recent wind loading and fomration of many wind slabs, considerable caution is advised in any Alpine or runnout zones from Alpine terrain.

Furano Now!

Monday 15th January 2007, 9:24am
Weather conditions: Light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night was a carbon copy of the night before, another 15cm of fresh powdery snow on the ground this morning in town and should be another great day on the mountain. All we are missing at the moment is the views but the great snow makes up for that.

It was -10 at the mountain base at 8am and should remain below -5 for most of the day. There is no wind here at all today. Long term forecast is still for these conditions to remain in place for the next 7 days.

'Kumaotoshi C' course was open yesterday but only once every hour, on the hour, for 10 minutes. Strange system but they are being very cautious due to the large crack that opened up on the side of that course earlier on in the season. they will keep monitoring it and, all being well, open it properly soon.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 15th January 2007, 9:27am
Weather conditions: Few clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

It's a tad cool and clearish this morning as result of a significant high pressure ridge pushing in from Siberia. This morning there was snow being swirled along the summit ridge of Korenege Yama (2,769 m a.s.l.). There is a weak crust (valley bottom i.e. 800 m a.s.l.) where the sun touched the snow yesterday (high temperature of 4C). Yesterday's field investigations found this to be so up to 1,900 m but the northern exposures seem to be non-crusty down to the valley bottom.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) the 0700 hr. reading is:
Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: -6.9 C
Maximum: 4 C
Minimum: -8 C
Wind: very light north
Precipitation: nil
Barometer and trend: 926 hPa and rising slowly
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): trace
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 69 cm
Foot penetration: 23 cm
Surface: surface hoar, size 2mm
Crust: 1 cm
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: Moderate (see below)

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Travel Advisory:
The snowpack continues to settle in the lower elevations (HS 73 yesterday to HS 69 today) with a similiar situation at tree line. Yesterday's relatively good visibility for the first time in several days allowed observation of a large fracture line on a south-east exposure of Shirouma Dake just below ridge line (size 3 avalanche). Snowpack investigations at 1,900 m a.s.l. showed that the consistent light precipitation and moderate winds have created a 20 cm layer that is bonding poorly to a faceting melt-freeze layer. Large, tensioned alpine features in aggressive terrain with the recent loading should be treated with suspicion.

Yesterday's warm afternoon temperatures and relatively clear skies warmed the snow and so formed a surface crust although even at valley bottom the truly shaded snow is not crusted but the lower you go in elevation the more the pure air temperature affected the snow.
If you do travel outside of the controlled area, be aware of the potential of "remote triggering" of avalanches. The hazard is "Moderate" above tree line, but just so.

This morning there were surface hoar size 2 mm crystals observed on the surface at the Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 15th January 2007, 9:56am
Weather conditions: Some clouds.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A slightly cloudy start to the day in Nozawa today. The temperatures are a quite cold -3C to –4C in the village and -7C on the mountain. The visibility today is quite good and there should be great opportunities on the mountain for photos of the village and down the valley. Yesterday on the mountain the snow was great early and was still fine in the afternoon despite the weather fining up and more people than there has been on the mountain. Skyline course and E course however were the exceptions. Both were quite cut up by around 3pm as more people had arrived over the weekend to celebrate the fire festival today. At this stage today there are very few people on the mountain and it may remain so due to the festivities.

The forecast is for cloud cover to remain today but no snow. Light snow should fall again by tomorrow afternoon and also on Wednesday.

Naeba Now!

Monday 15th January 2007, 9:58am
Weather conditions: grey sky with snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
What a lovely morning! There's blue skies - but as I speak a shroud of low grey cloud apears to be meandering on to the peak of Naeba. Whilst the rest of the sky is blue, there also apears to be a big mountain range of a white cloud - a front moving in from the north west.

There's a breeze and some roof melt (water dripping from the eaves) caused by solar radiation. There's also been about 5cm of snow over night.

The Naeba Gondolas are up and running and Kagura is reporting snowy conditions. Asagai has opened the force park today.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Monday 15th January 2007, 9:58am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was some light snow falling earlier on this morning but at the moment it is just cloudy with a few breaks in the cloud as well, so it is quite bright this morning - it looks like we might be seeing some of the sun later on in the day. It is not particularly cold this morning but will probably only rise to around +2 degrees this afternoon.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 15th January 2007, 10:19am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was another very light dusting of snow overnight, but the clouds seem to be breaking up and on their way this morning. I'm looking at some blue sky overhead right now and that fine weather seems to be improving. As is often the case with the cold temperatures we experience here the roads are icy and dangerous if you aren't used to driving in such conditions. The weekend is over and the slopes are looking very tempting with few people out there at the moment.   Read more ...
