Niseko Now!

Saturday 14th April 2007, 9:14am
Weather conditions: Overcast, raining.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a very grey and wet morning here today, we had some light snow showers overnight but it is now raining fairly heavily and there is very low cloud covering the mountains. The snow at village level is melting rapidly and it must be a similar story up on the mountain at least to the middle sections.
The forecast is giving rain all day today, overcast but dry tomorrow and then sunny with cloudy spells on Monday.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: Light snow, overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been snowing here since early this morning but it is too warm for it to settle on the ground in town. The snow is becoming very fine and looks like it will come to an end fairly soon but the forecast is indicating that we should expect snow showers throughout the day today then remaining overcast tonight and clearing up to give sunshine tomorrow afternoon.

Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A bit of rain overnight but it is not raining at the moment and is just cloudy with a temperature currently of 12 degrees. There will be some fairly blowy winds around early this afternoon which might affect lift operations.

This morning the Gala Yuzawa resort has officially announced that their season will close on Sunday 22nd April - rather than the originally planned closing date of 6th May. Whether the Naeba and Kagura areas are able to remain open as long as they plan remains to be seen. We'll let you know on this page as soon as they announce anything...   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Saturday 14th April 2007, 10:33am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a cloudy day here with a probable high of 10 degrees.

The last few days has seen more of the snow disappear and there is now pretty much no snow left on the lower slopes of the Naeba resort outside of the official runs that are still open. Bare patches are appearing higher up on the mountain as well. There's still a fair amount of snow up at Kagura of course (see report from last week).

For the weekend Naeba are opening up some more pair lifts meaning that today the lifts operating are: Dragondola, Prince Number 1 Gondola, Number 3 Quad, Number 5 Quad, 3 Romance (pair) lifts.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 14th April 2007, 14:13pm
Weather conditions: Blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been a fine bluebird day from early on in Nozawa today with just a bit of wispy cloud around. Both the top Yamabiko lifts are moving (as well as the Uenodaira quad and of course the Nagasaka gondola) and up there early on it was a bit overcast but as the day has progressed it has cleared up well and it now clear blue skies.

The park will be closing after tomorrow.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 14th April 2007, 15:10pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy and rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Crack "O" Nooners Report:

Hakuba currently lies under cloudy skies and there is light drizzle at the base which should be snowing up high. Today is pretty windy and some gondolas experienced closures in the AM. Snow conditions are spring slush and corn snow up high with some new snow on top of that. Probably no huge dumps but we will be happy with anything at this stage. Weather is looking good for Sunday and backcountry skiing should be sweet! Get out there and milk the last days of sliding.

( See Backcountry Advisory Below )
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Avalanche Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

Backcountry Travel Advisory:
Continue to be cautious as temperatures rise and on days that warm faster than usual.

People heading out in the backcountry should be wary of solar radiation on south facing aspects. Wind loaded slopes and cornices will also be areas to avoid as the day warms up. As mentioned earlier, shallow snowpack over bushes, rock outcroppings and bamboo (sasa) will be more likely to slide. Also take care in convex areas as there may be glide cracks formed and big holes in the snow. Wet, moisture laden snow will be more likely to slide on steep faces and this may also loose rocks/debris onto unwary travellers, so be careful under steep rock faces and cliffs.   Read more ...
