Furano Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2007, 7:42am
Weather conditions: Snowing heavily.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As you will have seen if you watched the news last night, winter is back with a vengeance! Here in Furano we have had some of the heaviest snow falls of the season in the last 24 hours - about 25cm during the day yesterday and another 35cm last night. Conditions were perfect on the mountain yesterday except for some poor visibility up high and it's looking pretty simillar today - beautifull powder snow but not much visibility. Temperaures hovering around -5 at the moment, it should remain fairly unchanged through the day as it did yesterday.

Forecast is giving snow all day today and tomorrow and then snow showers everyday for the following 4 days, what a great end to the season!   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snow

Yesterday the snow continued and we got another 20cm or so fall during the daytime, and this morning we probably have another 10-20cm of fresh powder snow to report.

It's a cold morning with the temperature down to -9 outside at the moment and a cold wind as well (but hopefully that won't be affecting operations too much during the day). Visibility isn't the best right now as the snow continues to fall, but the snow conditions are excellent - perhaps some of the best of the season so far.

Just one thing to mention -- you might notice the actual official snow depths of the resorts sometimes not moving up in line with the amount of fresh snow we are actually receiving. Whatever the official numbers, we're just reporting how much snow is being seen to be falling here - and at the moment that is good news!   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snowing.

It's DEEP! There's been a large 20cm dump overnight in the village and more up high, especially on leeward (south, south east) slopes. This has fallen on the 5 or so cm's that fell during the day yesterday. Yesterday was great, more knee deep powder. The upper mountain never opened as the winds remained too strong. Today the winds will ease a bit from yestreday but still remain quite strong.

The forecast is for more snow today and tonight. Wednesday and Thursday it's still forecast to snow but ease back a bit to showers and the wind ease overnight.

Late morning update:

Just an update. The wind is strong out there today, so strong that the Ace #2 at Hirafu is not running. The Gondola is running but expect a bit of a queue. Hanazono is not open and none of the upper lifts at all three resorts are running.

The wind has moved around from the west to the north/north west. All the snow that was blown onto easterly slopes yesterday is now being transported to south/south east facing slopes. That is to say conditions today are quite different to yesterday. Still snowing and plenty of deep to be found. If the wind dies down a bit this afternoon hopefully some more lifts will get running.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snow

And so the snow continues.... we could have done with this a month ago! ;)

There was 20cm of fresh snow on the top of the car this morning (just to the north in Shiozawa), and probably about the same in Yuzawa as well. It is currently still below zero and there is a bit of a cold wind - and apparently quite strong higher up - and the forecast is for the snow clouds to be with us all of today and into tomorrow. At the moment it looks like we can expect the snow to last until around tomorrow lunchtime when it is forecast to clear up... so as much as possible before then, please!

Conditions out there should be really very good.

The new snow also brings good news for NASPA Ski Garden, who have announced that they will reopen their slopes from Saturday 17th March.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2007, 8:36am
Weather conditions: Snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another snowy morning in Nozawa this morning. At least another 10cm has fallen on the mountain overnight so conditions will be epic! It was possible with so few people on the mountain yesterday to get fresh runs all day, and no doubt today will be similer. Winds today will still be as high as 35km/h and visibility will be poor. The base depths are 210cm at Yamabiko and 160cm at Uenotaira. The village and lower slopes has between 30 and 50cm. It is again now possible to ski top to bottom.

The outlook is for continued light snow at least untill thursday night. Winds may be as high as 35km.    Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2007, 8:39am
Weather conditions: white sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Kagura is still reporting closure up to the top of the rope-way (Top four man quad closed) but this may well open later this morning if/as the winds drop. Naeba is not to be seen this morning as conditions are still very snowy, though the wind doesn't seem to be so strong down here in the village - strong gusts rattled around the town last night as the snow continued to fall. The weather gave us waist deep snow in Naeba yesterday, pretty much to the bottom of the steep slopes. So we had waist high light fluffy powder -hard work to keep the nose of your board up and the movement up, a lot of stranded people in hidden moguls and flat sections. Also a lot of hidden rocks and rail damage, due to the fresh snow on uncovered areas, a recipe for damage.

So we're talking -5 in the village, near white-out conditions up on the mountain and snow, It's hard to say exactly how much snow we've had since yesterday, but I'm putting my number on 30cm possibly more, all tracks are filled in, everything is levelled. So expect many more fresh tracks today.   Read more ...

More snow! The snow continued to fall last night and is still comming down hard this morning. There is over 80cm of fresh snow at Tenjindaira and other upper mountain resorts, one of the biggest storms so far this season! The wind is quite light at the village level but gusty in the upper mountains.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2007, 9:54am
Weather conditions: Overcast to obscured
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yet another late season snowfall and great conditions on all hills in the Hakuba Valley. Fresh powder and packed powder abound on all runs and the snow is soft and fluffy. Currently Hakuba sits under cloudy skies and it is snowing at about 1cm an hour. The snow is expected to lighten up by 3:00PM. Some high winds may be a factor on which lifts are running so check with the hill before you head out. Enjoy the mid week pow pow!

Our trained avalannche forecaster and weather guru is out until the 16th of March, so the in-depth weather observations from Hirakawa Study Plot are put on hold til then.

Avalanche Hazard remains the same as safe out there powderhounds!

For guidelines to snow and weather observations see:

Above tree line: High

Tree line: High

Below tree line: Considerable

N.B. As was noted yesterday: these hazard levels will increase with the daytime warming and increased load and wind transportation (local increase of load).

Travel Advisory:

With winds being a major factor in lee side loading, due caution should be taken as we have had over 40cm of new snow in the last 48hrs. Steep and convex aspects of terrain should be avoided as with wind loaded gullies and open faces. The development of wind lips and cornices will also be areas of instability and should be avoided. Slab fractures (of 30cm) in the snowpack caused by ski cutting were observed on North aspects on Happo-One yesterday.
