Yuzawa Now!

Monday 13th February 2017, 8:01am
Weather conditions: Snow clouds still over the region
New snowfall: 12cm
Snow depth: --
[Please note: This report is actually appearing later on in the day due to technical issues in the morning, but it was originally written at the time shown on the time stamp]

Good morning from Yuzawa.

There's more snow to report this morning.

Kagura are reporting 15-20cm and Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall. My measurement is 12cm with more expected during the day today and tonight... and maybe tomorrow too with light snow still on the forecast. It doesn't look like it will be much in terms of cm though and perhaps there's a chance of some clearer skies from time to time as well - particularly around Wednesday and Thursday.

Cloudy at the moment with the sun seemingly trying to break through in places just now (it might not quite make it!), and the best part of another 10cm of fresh snow on the ground to report.

After all the snow we have been enjoying it does look like the storm is passing and this week there may even be some sunshine to enjoy... with fresh snow falling just in time for the weekend!

Hope you can come and enjoy it.

Niseko Now!

Monday 13th February 2017, 8:18am
Weather conditions: Clouds
New snowfall: 1cm
Snow depth: --
[Please note: This report is actually appearing later on in the day due to technical issues in the morning, but it was originally written at the time shown on the time stamp]

Good morning from here near Hirafu base, and this morning it is much the same as yesterday really.

I have another dusting of snow to report to you - perhaps just about enough for me to be able to justify awarding 1cm to this report, especially when you consider the mm's yesterday.

(Blimey, am I having to report millimetres?!) :(

It is perhaps slightly milder than yesterday at the start of the day, but other than that just another overcast kind of morning with light snow falling at times.

I feel something of a frustrated vibe from some quarters at the moment. We all of course want more fresh snow but there ain't much we can do about it. So heads and chins up and let's try to enjoy what we got - though what we got right now isn't Niseko powder. When will it come back? Unfortunately there doesn't look like much is lined up over the next few days and it might be towards the end of the week before we can get a nice new fresh layer.

Komaru, ne!

It looks like the top King Number 4 and Ace Number 4 lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu are going to be delayed opening but should be by too much.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Mountain base : -2°, 3cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -4°, NE8m/s, 5cm new snow, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m, -5°, N8m/s, 5cm new snow. 1000M Elevation: snowpack:170cm. Hirafu 1250m, -7°, N10m/s, trace new snow, snowdrift development. Coastal data: Kamui Cape:E3m/s, 1008hPa, wave 1.7m.

5cm of new snow is covering the mountain with 10-15cm snowdrifts on the south side of the mountain. From observation, snow below 11 Feb layer is compact and stabilised. Wind effected slopes above 1000m in the 35-40 degree range expect slabs or shallow surface avalanches, however general avalanche risk is low. Take care of hitting old tracks or obstacles hidden under the new snow. All gates are expected to be open if top lifts are running. Please listen to patrols advice before going out of bounds. Don't duck any ropes or netting.

This Avalanche Report is produced using data from 5am Moiwa Mikaeri observation, data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Japan Coast Guard and Snow and Ice Disaster Prevention Research. Out of bounds areas are mountainous terrain with lots of hidden dangers. Always error on the side of safety, Be aware of sudden weather changes and always be aware of your location. Have a nice day.

Morning from Nozawa and the snow clouds are still with us, though probably not for the whole day. But they'll hang around and maybe bring us some more fresh snow tonight and tomorrow too, though I wouldn't expect much.

For those looking forward to some clearer skies, perhaps Wednesday and Thursday might give you some of that...

[Please note: This report is actually appearing later on in the day due to technical issues in the morning, but it was originally written at the time shown on the time stamp]

Morning from Madarao, though I realise that you may well be only be getting to see this later on today. Sorry about that, server/technical stuff that I totally don't understand.

It is really good and cold on this Monday morning here in Madarao. There's some more fresh snow on the ground as well, so conditions should be excellent this morning - and without the weekend crowds too. Marvellous.

Looking at the forecasts, I think we can probably expect some clearer skies over the coming days and also some warmer conditions later in the week. Looks like Friday is when it'll be warmest but also the start of fresh snowfall. Fingers crossed it stays on the colder side, otherwise we might be in for a bit of rain before the snow. Anyway that's a few days off and so can always change. Keep an eye on the forecast.

In the meantime I expect a few days of top enjoyment out on the slopes.

Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
[Please note: This report is actually appearing later on in the day due to technical issues in the morning, but it was originally written at the time shown on the time stamp]

Morning from Hakuba.

Yesterday light winds, light snow and some blue skies at times (in places) making for some nice conditions out on the slopes.

This morning there's no snow being reported by resorts (other than up to 5cm at top by Goryu) and none at base but it's nice and cold this morning and so conditions should remain good.

There may be some light snowfall today at times, but nothing major is expected. Tomorrow too, according to the forecast.

Then perhaps a few days of clearer skies before the snow clouds are back around Friday. Looks like temperatures may get a little higher than we'd like towards the end of the week as well, so got to keep an eye on that...

Good morning from Appi,

Cloudy skies with a temperature on the thermometer of -4 right now. The sun had been trying to peek its head out this morning but we’ve got thicker clouds moving in which may hopefully bring a few centimetres of snow. As of now we may see 2cm but lets wait and see.

The next dew days will bring partly cloudy skies, stable temperatures hovering around -5 and fairly light winds out of the North West. Friday is looking promising for snowfall but lets wait and see what transpires.

It’s a holiday Monday here so expect some crowds out thereof you’re coming. All the groomed runs are in good shape and ready for some cruising.

Enjoy the day out there.

A dusting of snow this morning - not enough to add 1cm to todays report - and looks like it might be a day of decent weather today.

There's not a whole lot of snow on the forecast for the coming days really with just the odd snow shower here and there with cloudy or clearer skies. Towards the end of the week some warmer conditions are likely, but hopefully keeping cold enough for snow conditions to remain good.

Good morning from Grandeco.

The stormy weather has moved on and it is a beautiful morning here with lovely blue skies.

And there's 8cm of fresh snow on the ground at base.

With temperatures keeping cold, snow conditions are excellent powder snow, but maybe it will change this afternoon because of the forecast strong sunshine. Don't forget to protect your eyes!

There's more than 3m of snow depth at the resort now but more snow is needed for the season to continue into May as planned.

Monday 13th February 2017, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
It is a mild day with -5c recorded at base earlier in the morning, but temperatures have already risen significantly so it wont feel particularly cold out on the mountain today. The sky is cloudy with small scattered breaks showing the blue sky behind. Visibility is very good. The big question is when will we get a decent top up of snow? Well the forecast is showing light snow from this evening and then on Friday and Saturday, moderate snow is predicted with a heavy fall on Saturday night.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Monday 13th February 2017, 11:23am
Weather conditions: The sun wants to come through, but not yet
New snowfall: 17cm
Snow depth: --
The snow never really stopped through the day yesterday and into today... well, OK, we had a few moments of sun around lunchtime (kind of what it's threatening to do right now). But the flakes kept on drifting down, giving us about another 17cm. Just enough for the snowplows and the rotor (the giant eggbeater with a chute snowblowing thing) to come by around 4am and get me awake and ready for more fighting with the drifts. Which I really didn't have to do.

I know snow clearing has been a big theme this year, but let's just say that, with two places to work on now I really appreciate the labors of my neighbors, especially the hotelkeepers who have to do a good job to ensure the easy exit and access for their guests. Visitors, give your host some credit (or give em something else if they aren't pulling their weight).

Good evening from Naeba everybody.

Apologies for the delayed report today.

Today we saw overcast weather in the morning with light to moderate snow in the afternoon. This snow was relatively heavy.

Looking on we have snow expected every day other than Thursday. There will potentially be some rain on Friday but then turning into snow so shouldn't pose too much of an issue.

Kiroro Now!

Weather conditions: Cloudy/overcast
New snowfall: 14cm
Snow depth: --
Good evening from Kiroro.

So I’m sure you can guess by the absence of our reports that we have been super busy! Apologies.

It appears that we have been one of the lucky resorts to receive snow the past two days and everyone is hunting the POW.

Snow fall as of 7am this morning at the base and top was 14cm, on top of the 16cm and 14cm respectively from the day prior (Sunday). This brings our snow depth at the base to 205cm and 315cm at the top.

The snowfall has been reasonably wet and with the conditions over the past week we have had reports of snow movement. As usual we recommend caution if accessing the back country.

It has been snowing on and off today, and we had moderate temps and wind. We are expecting around another 6cm overnight with moderate conditions again tomorrow.

Monday 13th February 2017, 21:06pm
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: 15cm

The snow fell lightly for a change here and Tenjin opened up at noon today.

Conditions were excellent and heard the same from those who skied Hodaigi. The base is now well over 4m and the last thing we need is more snow but its still falling this evening at a rate that will see the mountain well and truly refreshed by morning.

Also high expectations that things get going earlier tomorrow and the backcountry for which we are most known, should be quite stable with the biggest snowfalls having had time to settle.

Forecast is for smaller snowfalls over the coming few days which is just what we need.
