Minakami Now!

Tuesday 13th December 2011, 8:22am
Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow falling in most of the resorts at the moment. It was a bit sleety a while ago but has made up its mind to snow a bit now. It feels quite cold out and there is a bit of a breeze blowing. If it keeps up like this all day it should add a few more cms to the base but it is getting awfully close to opening day for Houdaigi, Okutone & Norn.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 13th December 2011, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Cloudy overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a cloudy morning today in Hakuba, although it looks like it is beginning to snow lightly. If the weather keeps cold we should start getting more flurries and more parts of mountain should open. It may warm up a bit on Wednesday then turn colder with more snow expected late in the week.

Currently open resorts are Goryu (just Alps Dai ichi pair lift), Hakuba 47 (line 8) and Happo One (just the Kurobishi Quad). You need to ride the Goryu gondola to access the upper run shared by Hakuba 47 and Goryu. To access the open terrain on Happo you will have to ride the gondola, take the alpen pair lift then ski down the Kurobishi Quad.

Over in neighbouring Otari, Tsugaike Kogen has also opened up with one top pair lift operating (accessed via the Gondola), so limited operations there as well.

Please do keep in mind that the snow is shallow and there are lots of rocks, shrubs and things poking out - what looks like powder may not be that deep at all.

Since the limited runs open the on the resorts, they are giving discounted ticket prices until the rest of the hill opens, which should be soon.

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 13th December 2011, 9:31am
Weather conditions: Cloud, rain/sleet
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the rain clouds moved in later on in the day and we got some heavy rain falling overnight. That translated into 3-5cm of snow up on the top of Kagura and today we have sleet/snow on the forecast. It being snow of the wet variety, I wouldn't expect it to accummulate at all even if it falls in town.

Tomorrow looks like it should be a fine and sunny one, and then we can look towards Thursday and Friday for lower temperatures and the chance about snow. No guessing how much we'll get, it's always difficult to gauge early on. Sometimes there's a forecast for light snow and it dumps, and sometimes the other way round. That applies to throughout the season of course but seems to be more so early and late on. Although that might just be the impatiently waiting mode talking!

It's a cold 2 degrees this morning.

Lift operations up at Kagura and Naeba remain the same.

Furano Now!

Tuesday 13th December 2011, 9:43am
Weather conditions: Clear with passing cloud
New snowfall: 25cm
Snow depth: 90cm
Things are really starting to look very very good here in Furano. Yesterday afternoon we received a further 25cm of snow to top up the already impressive conditions on the field. Todays weather is blue sky with passing cloud but it is pretty cold out there. There is a light to moderate wind out on the mountain. This is not interferring with any lift operations but it does mean an extra layer of clothing may be needed.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 13th December 2011, 9:51am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just a sprinkling of new snow overnight really here with the trees looking all frosted over, but it feels cold and wintery this morning. The forecast has things clearing up later on in the day and clear, fine weather tomorrow with the sun making an appearance. Things still look set to get much colder - minus double figure cold - come Thursday and Friday when we can expect snow clouds to make their next deposit. Let's hope a decent amount.

Still no changes to resort operations really - very limited in terms of both terrain and snow depth. So while there are chances to get out and have some fun, things have not kicked off properly yet as we wait for that first large snowfall that will allow things to open up more.

I recommend if you do get out there not to take new gear... the snow cover just isn't good enough yet and you are liable to get some knocks. We wouldn't want that!

Official snow depths [13th Dec 11]:
Takamagahara Mammoth - 20cm
Ichinose Family - 30cm
Kumanoyu - 30cm
Yakebitaiyama - 35cm
Terakoya - 30cm

Resorts part open [13th Dec 11]:
Takamagahara Mammoth - one triple lift
Ichinose Family - two pair lifts
Kumanoyu - two pair lifts
Yakebitaiyama - one pair lift, one quad lift
(Higashiyama gondola operating and part of Terakoya open for pole training)   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 13th December 2011, 10:32am
Weather conditions: Generally cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This cold morning while we just had a sprinkling in Naeba, Kagura is reporting 3-5cm of new snow up on top there. There's still a lot of cloud around but it's just that at the moment - cloudy - here in Naeba. The lower slopes are still for the most part white with a thin snow cover, but it certainly is still thin and some patches showing through in places. Of course the run that is open at the base here has enough snow as they keep on pumping out more of the stuff every night.

Everyone is of course every day talking about when we can expect that dump of snow that will really get things going. Not sure that it's on the weekly radar just as yet though, but it does look like we can expect some light snow tomorrow and then possibly something more substantial on Friday along with some really very cold temperatures over the weekend.   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Tuesday 13th December 2011, 10:53am
Weather conditions: Sun, generally clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday things turned out to be a bit wild out there with some strong winds blowing around in the afternoon and perhaps just a few cm of snow falling - and being blown around. Reports of up to 10cm higher up on the mountain.

The winds and clouds have moved on and this morning we are being treated to some lovely blue skies and just a bit of white cloud hanging on here and there. Actually the next few days look to be due to bring us similar, before it gets colder once again and from later on Thursday through the weekend we can expect the snow clouds to be back. Fingers crossed they bring a present for us.

Official snow depths (13th Dec '11)

Utopia - 30cm
Chuo - 45cm
Paradise - 35cm
Uwanodai - 10cm

Operating lifts (13th Dec '11)

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 13th December 2011, 11:06am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning! It's snowing up on the top of the mountain this morning and the resort is reporting 5cm of snow overnight and another 5cm up there since earlier this morning. That sounds like 10cm of white goodness to me. A look at the webcams shows that visibility is poor - and hardly anyone out there! As you can see below, with Yamabiko and Uenotaira open, the resort is boasting 7000m of skiable runs to enjoy.

Just to recap - you need to get the Nagasaka Gondola up to the snow and then the Yamabiko quads and Uenotaira quad are servicing the skiable runs.

It would of course be great if the whole mountain could open up, but we are just going to have to wait a bit longer for that. Tomorrow looks like it should be a day of fine weather but more encouraging snow clouds are due back Thursday with Friday looking promising for a potentially decent snowfall. Going to get very cold as well according to the forecast. Fingers crossed!

Current Official Snow Depths Numbers:

Yamabiko:
40cm

Uenotaira:
40cm

Current Lift operations:
Nagasaka Gondola
Yamabiko quads
Uenotaira quad

Current courses open:
Uenotaira (2000m)
Yamabiko A (1300m)
Yamabiko B (800m)
Yamabiko C (850m)
Yamabiko D (1250m)
Yamabiko E (1000m)   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 13th December 2011, 16:12pm
Weather conditions: overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was very cold and windy last night as the forecast storm blew through Niseko, lasting right through morning with the wind causing blizzard like conditions.

Since the last report over 20cm of new snow has fallen and the wind has died down a little.

This looks to be just a lull in conditions before Wednesday night sees the return of the snow and also extremely strong winds.

Wind chill is going to have to be factored into clothing decisions, it would be advisable to wear a mask/cover up exposed skin for any extended periods of skiing over the next few days.

Current lift operations at time of writing (subject to change depending on conditions)

Hirafu:
Hirafu family pair, Ace Quad, Ace Pair 3 and Hooded pair 3 (operation slowed), swinging monkey and holiday pair running. Gondola also running

Annupuri:
Gondola, jumbo quad and Pair 2 and Annupuri Pair 3 running.

Niseko Village:
Banzai, Mori no and Community chair and Gondola running

Hanazono:
Hanazono lift 1,2 and 3 running   Read more ...
