Niseko Now!

Wednesday 13th December 2006, 8:30am
Weather conditions: Cloudy with drizzle
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Temperatures remained above freezing in the valley overnight and there has been some light rain. This morning there is a little drizzle and thankfully there doesn't look like there will be any heavier rain throughout the day. Most of the loss in snowdepth has been due to compaction of the snowpack rather than being washed away by rain. The cloud should clear up overnight and temps will drop well below freezing once again. At this stage little snow is forecast to hit the region until the weekend so the next couple of days won't have the best snow conditions. At least the base this year has had a chance to consolidate so hopefully there'll be few large crack on the off-piste later in the season.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 13th December 2006, 9:03am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I awoke to a terrible noise here in Furano today; the sound of dripping water - it was raining!! So far it has only been very light rain and it seems to have stopped now but any rain is bad rain.

The temperature is much higher today than it has been recently, it was around 1 degree at 8.30am and it is predicted to reach 5 today.

Looking at the satellite it would seem we have had all the precipitation coming our way for the next few days and the next band should hit us on friday by which time the temperature should have dropped again.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 13th December 2006, 9:51am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a beautiful morning here in Yuzawa with bright blue skies and the sun out from early on. It's also very mild with the temperature at the moment around +3 degrees and set to rise to around +8 degrees later on.

Looking back over the reports from this time last year, it seems we had about a metre of snow even down at town level on this day in 2005 and the season had really started. Right now it is still not feeling like winter yet as we wait for the big snow to arrive.

So when it is going to arrive? Of course everyone round here wants to know the answer to that one! The next cold front that has been promised still seems to be on course for the coming weekend (Sunday/Monday/Tuesday), we'll just have to see whether it brings enough snow for things to really get going.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 13th December 2006, 10:03am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
BEAUTIFUL bluebird sky morning with the Alps looking more like Winter after the unexpected but welcome snow we had yesterday! Yep, about 10 cm of new snow fell above the 1500m mark yesterday and it would be good to get on it quick because we are about to get a new warm front with possible rain, but hopeful snow this afternoon. Winds are picking up from light Westerlies early this morning to moderate winds out of the West this afternoon. Currently 3 deg.C in the Valley and -1 deg.C above 1500m.

Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47, Tsugaike and Happo are all open today with minimal lift operation. Hakuba Cortina, Hakuba Norikura, Hakuba Iwatake and Hakuba San Alpina are all on standby and will open when snow conditions allow.

AVALANCHE ADVISARY: MODERATE

Watch for cornices and loaded lee slopes that were created last week getting heavy with added snow fall and warmer weather. The warmer weather should, however, help to solidify the pack in the alpine and create a good bond with the ground cover.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 13th December 2006, 10:19am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Bright sunshine this morning in Naeba and relatively mild temperatures - and that snow on the bottom of the slopes of Naeba is quickly moving back up the mountainside as it melts away! We are really needing the next snowfall to arrive and get the season started properly. The best bet is still to go high at Kagura.

Here's hoping that cold front this weekend brings us a considerable dump of fresh snow.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 13th December 2006, 12:07pm
Weather conditions: Overcast with moderate temparatures. (6 deg C)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a clear sky with low temparatues last night, a thick hoar frost covered the ground this morning throughout the village valley. Solar radiation (the sun) and warm mid morning temparatures (8 deg C) have now melted all signs of the frost.

From 10:30 on fast moving Strato-cumulus clouds have been covering the sky, warning signs of a oncomming front. The front looks like it will bring a decent amount of precipitation which will mostly be rain at low levels and snow above 1500m.

Looking towards the weekend, it looks like Minakami will be getting a decent amount of snow on Friday, followed by possibly more on Sunday and Monday next week.

Houdaigi and Tenjindaira are both planning to be open this weekend with most other Minakami ski areas opening around Dec 23rd.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 13th December 2006, 12:57pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was another fine and relatively mild morning in Shiga Kogen with no new snow to report, but in the last hour or so it has started to cloud over and it looks like there might be a chance of rain or snow later tonight and into tomorrow. Then after that the next snowfall seems likely for Sunday and Monday. Resort operations remain as they were with limited stretches of runs open in different parts of Shiga Kogen.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 13th December 2006, 13:22pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Today started off with fine weather and blue skies but it has clouded over since then and is overcase not and feels like it is getting colder with a chance of rain (or hopefully snow) later on tonight and into tomorrow morning. It's about +6 degrees at the time of writing this report.

We then have cloud/snow forecast for Friday and also on Sunday and Monday, so hopefully that will help us along with lots of new snow.   Read more ...
