Weather conditions: Cloud, overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is warmer this morning.

The sun was out just before but seems to be taking a break at the moment and fairly overcast at the moment. It looks like it will just be cloud for the day, though later on tonight there is a good chance of rain and that to continue through tomorrow. It will rise to around 13 degrees in the early afternoon today.

Winds while not making much of an impact here at town level mean that Gala Yuzawa is not open today.

Last chance for Kandatsu, Iwappara and Maiko today....   Read more ...

Visibility is better this morning but there is once again quite a bit of cloud around.

Snow is pretty much disappeared from the village area now and the lower slopes are looking rather patchy, but up top Yamabiko is still boasting over two and a half meters of snow, still plenty up there. Earlier this morning around 2 degrees up there, and 5 down in the village which will probably rise to double figures early in the afternoon.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 13th April 2008, 10:19am
Weather conditions: partially cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A warm calm morning in Hakuba with lots of people heading to the Hakuba 47 terrain park for some spring jibbing and jumping. Those mogul mashers are hard at work trying to see if they can carve down through the 3 metres plus of snow on Usagi Daira, Happo. And of course the early morning carvers on ski and board are out in force up high on Hakuba Goryu's Alps Daira.

The last day of operation for Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47, Happo One and Tsugaike will be May 6th. It is always novel to go for a ski in your shorts on a May morning and then enjoy a picnic lunch underneath the blooming cherry trees before getting a good Mt. bike ride in or enjoying a relaxing afternoon on lake Aokiko. Yep it's that month of the year in Hakuba where you can enjoy all that Hakuba has to offer.

Take care if heading off piste or in the trees as there are open glide cracks in the snow, hollow sections that can collapse and wet snow avalanches on steep lines on any aspects. Those heading backcountry should be aware of also rockfall coming down from melting snow, rocks and trees on the snow surface and water flowing under the snow that can make crossing creeks and gullies potentially treacherous.

Avalanche Advisory:

A cooler day yesterday helped to develop a nice snowfall in the afternoon surprising many. The mountain did not see much benefit from the system passing through and has returned today to our high overcast, mild day.

The forecast is for an increase in the cloud and a slight drop in temperatures which should lead to another snowfall tomorrow above 1000m. The mountain is still fun up high so another good day out and about.   Read more ...
