Furano Now!

Tuesday 12th February 2008, 7:45am
Weather conditions: snowing, poor visability,
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was another warm day, and the snow continued to melt. Puddles in the drains and sticky snow made it feel like spring already.

The good news is that the predicted storm did hit last night. It hit around 7pm last evening and has now been snowing for the 12 hours and we have 20+ cm on fresh snow.

The snow quality does not feel like the big fat fluffy flakes we are use to up here, but as it gets colder it should turn to bigger flakes. It is a relief to get this storm as the recent melt really hurt the mountain.

It's still snowing and expected to snow for the next 3 days. Winds are predicted to be strong Wednesday night and through Thursday.

The pick of the runs today will be Challenge!

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 12th February 2008, 8:26am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a very fine day - and evening - with hardly a cloud to be found and bright blue skies. Overnight, clouds have moved in and it is a greyer morning here. Currently the temperature is just over 0 degrees and there is just a slight wind.

Later on we can probably expect snow clouds to move in, and at the moment heavy snow with strong winds is currently forecast for tomorrow so it might be blizzard like conditions out there tomorrow.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 12th February 2008, 8:30am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The London peasoup fog settled in yesterday to make skiing at the top of the mountain next to impossible. The out of bounds tracked up slush from the day before had frozen making skiing truely impossible. The groomed was OK but a bit firm by normal Niseko conditions.

Last night it started snowing heavily and was looking good for today but the snow must have slowed right down as there was only about 5cm on the ground in town. There is a front blowing over this part of Hokkaido but it is questionable as to how much powder it will bring. Yesterday’s tracks are still remaining, however some slopes are already getting reset with up to 30cm of wind-drifted fresh snow. It is not looking the best but should be far better than yesterday. I am heading up now to test it out.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 12th February 2008, 8:35am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the sun shone all day with a clear stary night last night which has produced a crust layer.

This morning the temperature has dropped and the sky is cloudy and looking like snow. The forecast predicts snow from around 10:00 which will continue through to Thursday bringing an expected 60cm to the valley.

The wind will be mostly calm today but some very strong winds are expected tomorrow from midday to late afternoon. So choosing more protected ski areas would be wise.

Backcountry
Multiple weak layer still exist in the upper 1-1.5m of the snow pack. Due caution should be exercised when choosing routes. Steep and difficult terrain should be avoided.

Alpine: Considerable

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 12th February 2008, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The long weekend is now behind us and today things should be back to normal for a weekday in Shiga Kogen. It was a busy weekend on the slopes, but for people who stuck around for yesterday there were treated to some fantastic weather.

This morning the clouds are back. Right now it is relatively mild as well, with the temperature outside currently at -3 degrees. While it isn't snowing yet, we can expect it to be falling sometime today and as the temps should drop later on and then tomorrow looks like it will be back to mid-winter conditions with snow and strong winds on the forecast.

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Tuesday 12th February 2008, 8:49am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was like a March day on the slopes yesterday with temperatures popping above zero in the early afternoon. But the snow has begun this morning with extremely heavy snow set for this evening. If you're heading up to Myoko this evening or early tomorrow morning, please be careful. The snow is forecasted to pile up at a rate of 6cm an hour! That's the heaviest of the season so far if accurate.

So tomorrow will be a boarder's paradise with record snowfall.

Today, the pick is Akakura Kanko. The fresh snow is fluffing out the ski and board tracks from the weekend crowds, and the runs seem longer than even Suginohara with off-piste stuff completely allowed.

Your Myoko area levels for today:
270cm (Akakura Kanko);
277cm (Akakura Onsen);
230cm (Ikenotaira);
345cm at the top, 180cm bottom (Suginohara);
270cm (Kyukamura);
190cm (Pine Valley);
365cm (Seki Onsen);
165cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
175cm (Madarao Sympathique);
180cm (Madarao Kogen);
285cm (Myoko Ski Park);
150cm (Togakushi);
170cm (Kurohime);
130cm (Iizuna);
135cm (Iizuna Kogen)

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 12th February 2008, 9:10am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A bit of a change this morning, the sun seems to be suffering from the cloud, though I've spotted the odd shadow at times when she has actually managed to claw her rays through the cloud cover. The temperature is wallowing on zero at the moment, there is no breeze and there has been no new snow yet.

The top of the Naeba hill is barely visible now though I can still just about see the top Gondola No2 (the blue one). Just been looking at the forecast and so I guess this cloud that is seeping in to the area could be the dump coming in... it looks set to snow for the next few days. Nice.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 12th February 2008, 9:24am
Weather conditions: High Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We are now back to normality in Nozawa. It`s a standard quiet weekday with scarcely a person to be seen around the village. The lift lines will have disappeared and all we need now is for the forecast dump to materialise.

Yesterday afternoon provided warm temperatures and slushy snow, even right at the top of the mountain. There is likely to be a bit of ice around this morning.

The weather experts are predicting snow to begin falling any time now and continue for the entire week. Temperatures should drop tonight with the arrival of a front and with it fairly strong northerly winds. My fingers are crossed that the spring feeling that is in the air will be gone shortly and we`ll be back to winter.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 12th February 2008, 10:19am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Huge crowds on the ski-field yesterday with the local hospital full and skis and snowboards piled up outside. Big low above us and today the crowds are gone and there's 5 cm of dry fluffy snow in the valley. Goryu are reporting 5 cm up top but that always seems to mean nice powder lines...

Moderate temperatures outside now with around -1/0 degrees in the valley possibly warming this afternoon before dropping later this evening. Snow is still falling and seems set to do so all day and continuing. Tonight's snowfall is expected to be the heaviest this week with snow flurries continuing through the weekend.
