Snow and weather reports posted on Monday 28th May 2018
Thursday 10th March 2011, 9:18am
The good conditions held up real well yesterday with temperatures remaining cold all day. The cold weather is set to continue through until the end of the week and there should be snow on and off through until Saturday night. There was 4cm of new snow over night, and this is very light dry powder. The ski competitions continue on the Furano Zone until March 13. Conditions this morning are ungroomed powder sitting on top of a packed powder groomed base. With perfect skies and sunshine this would be a day not to miss.
Due to ski competitions the following runs are closed today: Technical Course, Panorama Course, Spies Course, Ropeway Course. Read more ...

Snow and strong wind
Good news is that it is snowing in Minakami this morning (and has been since yesterday evening) but the wind is blowing quite hard today too.
The forecasters got it right yesterday. The blue sky was replaced by cloud at lunchtime and it suddenly felt alot colder. The snow started early evening and the wind came with it. It has been snowing most of the night but the wind has been blowing most of the time.
It's going to be a cold one all day but there will be some great snow around if you can find the sheltered spots. Read more ...

Good news this morning. First off the most impressive numbers.... Karuga resort is reporting 50cm of fresh snow on the upper slopes and 30cm on the lower slopes. And there has been I would say 20-30cm of snow lower down as well with some nice snow on the tops of cars this morning. Brilliant!
So another blast of winter overnight. It started off late last night with some very strong winds, but the winds seem to be less of an issue this morning (except up top see below). At the moment the snow is easing off somewhat in Yuzawa with pretty good visibility in Yuzawa. I can see that even with that though, right now snow is falling just to the north in Minamiuonuma and so it will likely be coming here next.
Winds are affecting resort operations at Kagura with the usual lift operations plan - see the Naeba Now report page coming soon.
Snow is forecast for the day and on and off tomorrow as well, to be followed with clearer conditions over the weekend. With this new snow, should be another good one.
Right now it is -3 in Yuzawa and it probably won't make it much above 0 during the day.
Official snow depths @ Thursday 10th March 2011 AM
The snow has kept falling pretty much unabated from the last report adding at least another 30cm to the already deep cover of fresh snow. It's going to be very deep out there today and is just about as good as anytime this whole season. It's remaining cold and the snow is great quality powder. The wind has picked up though up high and and top lifts in Grand Hirafu are currently on wind hold. Top gates around the mountain are also closed with avalanch danger increasing dramatically with all the new snow. All in all we couldn't really expect better conditions for this time in March. The snow is expected to continue through tomorrow and then ease on Saturday. Sunday and Monday are expected to warm up considerably with temps getting above freezing at the base. Another system will approach later on Monday and a little rain can be expected at first before turning back to snow on Tuesday. So make sure you get up there during the next couple of days to enjoy the deep powder before the warmer temps hit.
Current Official Snow Depths:
Grand Hirafu: Top - 430 Bottom - 220
Niseko Village: Top - 400 Bottom - 200
Annupuri: Top - 390 Bottom - 200
Peak gates 2, 3 and 6 will be kept closed all day today. The snowfall and wind above 800m started to pick up from 2am and new snowdrifts are drastically developing on top of yesterday’s slabs. Looking at the snowfall transition, weather data and present status, leeward open faces, knolls, under cornices and valleys’ sidewalls are in an extremely unstable condition and a large, up to 60cm thick, surface slab avalanche is highly likely to occur. Extreme avalanche hazard in all Niseko range and Shiribeshi area today. Do not be fooled by momentary clear windows. Stay away from the bottom of an open slope or gully bottoms. The snow in the trees is good and deep. Annupuri peak 6am: NW24.2m/s, -12.6℃. Coastal wind: NW14m/s at Benkei cape. Winter weather pattern is persisting and cold air is flowing in. Beware of frostbites.
Winter-like conditions once again here with up to 30cm or so of new snow down at base and Kagura resort reporting a whopping 50cm of fresh snow on it's upper slopes this morning. If I could post a smiley thingy here, I'd do it.
So, it was snowing quite heavily as things finished up yesterday along with a strong wind blowing about. It's much the same this morning and we are surely going to see additional cm on top of that 30cm today though the wind is still fairly strong and blowing things around. It's cold too with Naeba telling us that it's -12 up top. Doesn't sound like mid-March to me that, but more more please!
Kagura is suffering from the winds so not all of that new snow will be accessible today unfortunately. From Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura No1 pair lift and from Tashiro Ropeway to Kagura No1 quad lift are open at the moment. The Kagura No1 quad to Tashiro No6 pair and the Kagura-Tashiro connecting course may well open later on if conditions allow. It will all depend on the wind.
More snow likely today and tomorrow before clearer and probably sunny weather conditions over the weekend. Should be a really great one.
Official snow depth numbers below aren't really reflecting what we are seeing, so we'll just keep them there for the record. The reality is what I have written above!
Snow did arrive later on in the day yesterday and indeed it brought with it 20cm or so. It's a mid-winter morning in Zao. 20+cm of fresh quality snow even down in the village so I would guess 30cm on the top of the hill. Minus double digit temperatures. It feels like mid-January... which is of course a great thing!
Up top a temperature of -15 degrees and snow falling with poor visibility. The top trees at the resort are still in Monster mode and some very fine views still on show.
There's not a whole lot of snow forecast for today but we will likely see light snow on and off during the day and also snow tomorrow. This is all excellent news for the people out there now of course but also for people planning a weekend visit.... clearer conditions are forecast for the weekend at the moment and so with this fresh snow and cold temperatures it should be an excellent weekend.
Snowing at the moment but sun is trying to break out
Another huge snow fall in Nozawa with 50cm of fresh being recorded overnight!
It started to snow very heavy from about 5pm yesterday and has not stopped since then so it is going to be a powder hounds paradise on the mountain today with all this fresh snow and very few people around.
Can never understand why people are super keen in Januray and February then seem to forget about skiing and boarding in March, especially when it tends to consistently deliver great snow. Anyway more untracked conditions for the stayers!
Yesterday was a beautiful morning and nice up the top but a little crusty in places then got colder and the weather started to close in as the day got on.
The outlook is for the sun to make an appearance later today which it is trying to do now then more snow tomorrow followed by a fine weekend and then more potential moderate snow again around Tuesday next week.
Good times just keep rolling in Nozawa.
All except the following Kandahar Hachiman Uenotaira Half Pipe Karasawa Wave Park
It is colder again this morning and since last night we have seen new snowfall - and a fair amount in places too. I'd say up to 30cm in places, but a wind is blowing.
It's one of those days when we have quite different conditions in different areas. Cloud with a fair bit of blue sky on show in Ichinose. Heavy snow and poor visibility just round the corner in Okushiga Kogen. In general though it is cloud with snow.
The forecast is for cloud/snow this morning but clearing up before the end of the day -- and then more snow tomorrow. And then clearer conditions for the weekend. So as you can see it's changing quickly at the moment.
It's keeping cold though and March really has kept low in general. This morning Kumanoyu was reporting -12 degrees with the 'warmest' being reported being -5 degrees. So you need to keep wrapped up as per mid-winter at the moment and forget thoughts of spring skiing. Not a bad thing though!
Not many (lucky!) people out on the slopes again as per usual for a normal weekday.
Nighta operations this evening planned at the following resort area:
- Ichinose Family
Official resort snow depths as of 10th March 2011 AM:
Light, dry powder fell from the afternoon and there was some decent accumulation, Goryu reporting 30cm up top so you can imagine that equals a lot of good fresh snow out there.
And get this - Hakuba Cortina is reporting a whopping 50cm of fresh snow this morning up top, with 40cm down by the hotel. Upper slopes there now busting the 4m mark for, I think, the first time this season. Not bad for nearly mid-March!
The snow depth at Tsugaike has also taken a 40cm depth jump as well this morning.
Temperatures are holding cold, snow will stay in good condition with around 0 degrees at the base and -7 at 1400m. There were some gusting winds overnight so I wouldn't be surprised to find some areas wind-blown and others full of wind-deposited fluffy powder super-stash pockets of joy.
More snow forecast for Friday with Saturday and Sunday looking to be pearler bluebird days, we'll probably see hundreds of people out hiking this weekend.
Snow has been sliding on top of a melt-freeze layer and with all this extra snow on top if it slips there could be large-scale slides so play it careful out there and always travel with qualified guides if you don't have training and experience as well as knowing the area you are entering.
Official snow depths and operations @ Thursday 10th March AM:
Hakuba Goryu 30cm of fresh up top, 10cm below. Nice! Night time operations from 6pm until 9:30pm. Alps daira - 305cm; Toomi - 170cm; Iimori - 125cm.
Hakuba 47: 47 is reporting 20cm of fresh snow on Thursday morning. Snow depth (upper) - 217cm.
It has been a fine day in Madarao, some cloud in the sky but lots of blue as well and the sun making an appearance.
A great day in terms of snow conditions as well as the resort was reporting another 40cm of fresh snow this morning on the mountain.
Light snow is forecast from late tonight into tomorrow but things should have cleared up by the end of tomorrow. After that we are looking at a clear and sunny weekend. Should be a great one with these snow conditions we have at the moment.
