Minakami Now!

Saturday 10th March 2007, 6:36am
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is looking like it will turn out to be another beautiful blue sky day in Minakami today with clear skies and cool temperatures at present before the sun comes up. No wind at all at present but it may pick up during the day and get stronger towards thi afternoon.

Some light snow fell in Minakami last night that brought about 5cm to the upper mountains, so on piste conditions should be relatively nice under foot. In the backcountry things were looking pretty stable this week in the tree line and below tree line, with 25 cm of fresh snow on a melt freeze crust.

Weather conditions: Sun, some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday turned out to be fine in the morning and then it clouded over with even a bit of light snow falling at one time before ending the day cloudy.

Today has started off with quite clear skies and even early on the sun is out - it is looking like it will be a fine day, and temperatures are forecast to rise to around +9 early this afternoon. At the moment it is about 0 degrees. There is Only a slight breeze at the moment but stronger winds are forecast for later on this afternoon, and because of those potential winds Gala have announced that they will be closing at 1pm today.

Best snow cover and conditions will be found higher up - as will surely be the case until the season ends.

Tomorrow temperatures are forecast to drop again and we have a chance of some fresh snow falling once more.

Hope you have a good weekend!   Read more ...

More fine weather early on this morning in the region - blue skies and the sun already as the day starts. It's a cold start but we can once more expect the sun to take the temperature into positive numbers. There is new snow for the weekend to report but a decent chance of snow tomorrow. Before then the forecast is warning of possible stronger winds later on today and tonight.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: High cloud.

Epic! What more can I say. Yesterday was one of the great days of the season. I was fortunate to be one of the first on the peak in the morning and riding fresh all the way down is something I'll remember. It snowed on and off yesterday in between clear spells. By mid-afternoon it cleared up and overnight was cold and clear.

Today will start out with some clear periods and light to moderate wind. However this afternoon we should feel a strengthening southerly. By tonight this will become strong. Overnight we may see some rain in the village but it will fill as snow higher on the mountain. During the night it will cool down and we should see snow to low levels by tomorrow morning. It is set to snow steadily through Sunday and Monday so get prepared for more deep powder.

Today the snow conditions will still be good. With no new snow overnight the powder will be largely tracked but some stashes can still be found.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 10th March 2007, 9:11am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
With not a cloud in sight the dawn broke soft and cool (-3.5 C). Today is forecast to be a bright and pleasant one with a high of 7 C with light west wind. At the Minegata Lift Company the snow was observed to be powdery down to about 950 m a.s.l. in the shade. The lift serviced terrain is hard and fast where smooth. Where rutted and frozen it may be a bit "interesting". Once again a note of caution as per emerging hazards and bare spots especially at the lower elevations. Tomorrow afternoon a wave of precipitation (occluding front over the Sea of Japan) is forecast to engulf the Hakuba environs.

Minimum: -6.0 C

Barometer and trend: 923 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 51 cm
Foot penetration: 3 cm
Surface: Melt freeze crust, some faceting, 3 mm
Density of surface snow: not observed
Crust: 17 cm, about 6 cm below surface layer
Cloud ceiling: outer space

For guidelines to snow and weather observations see: http://www.avalanche.org/~research/guidelines/pdf/Chapter1.pdf

Hazard:

Above tree line: Moderate

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

N.B. These hazard levels will increase with the daytime warming. With this warming the exposed rocks will increasingly become weak points as will scattered trees.

Travel Advisory:
The recent storm snow (HST) is settling well. What may become a concern is the faceting of the melt freeze crust below it and the potential for this layer collapsing. Keep in mind the isothermal nature of the lower elevation snowpack at lower elevations.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sunny.

Just a dusting of snow in the last 24 hours and the sun is out and warming up this morning. Conditions were a lot more comfortable on the mountain yesterday after the fresh snow but it is still pretty compacted.

The forecast is giving a sunny morning becoming overcast in the afternoon. There is a good chance of heavy snow tomorrow morning and snow showers every day for the next week.

No new snow this morning, not yet anyway, but although the sun is out, things are looking like something is a foot. Well it was yesterday - knee height powder over in Kagura and I was assured last night that they opened the top 2 man lift. And so they are reporting the same for today, Woo hoo!

Anyway, the sky is overcast but the sun is still out, 2 degrees at 900 meters with no wind.

Forecast looks good - A dual low pressure system loitering over on the western side of Japan. About time for some snow.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 10th March 2007, 10:39am
Weather conditions: Fine.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A partly cloudy start to the day in Nozawa today. Winds are once again low, there was a light dusting of fresh snow, and visibility is very good. As per the last few days most of the lower resort is shut but everything from Paradise course up is open. The weekend is here again so the slopes will be a little busy. Base depths are currently 170cm at Yamabiko and 90cm at Uenotaira.

The outlook for snow for the next few days is good. At least 10cm should fall up top tonight and around 35cm on Sunday and Monday. Winds will be as high as 45km/h at the top on Sunday and Monday.
