More snow overnight, perhaps an additional 20cm or so and so a lot of fresh fluffy powder over the last 24 hours. Actually, Kagura are reporting 50-70cm (though curiously not increasing their official snow depth!) and I would guess resorts around town will have all seen at least 40cm since yesterday.

Just at the moment as I write this it is not snowing in town (it is snowing higher up) but more is forecast for the rest of the day... and it looks like the skies might be clearer (or just cloudy) for tomorrow. It's a cold -3 degrees.

Strong winds up at Kagura and Naeba are affecting lift operations there and only part of the resorts are open early on this morning. If the winds calm down, expect them to open up later on... though it is looking like it will be a windy and snowy day out there.

Anyway, I am going to post a further update to this page later on this evening with the latest for the weekend and the current snow depths at resorts.

-----

Well, it just keeps on piling up!

Earlier on when I posted this mornings report there was a lull in the snowfall but it was soon snowing again and there has got to have been up to another 20+cm or so since this morning. The resorts if anything seem to be underestimating the increases in snow depths - perhaps they don't want people 'scared off' by there being too much snow. Of course, we all know here that there's never too much snow and it's all good. More please!

Some strong winds affected Kagura and Naeba in particular today though things should be back to normal there tomorrow.

As I write this it is snowing heavily still in Yuzawa and is forecast to continue until perhaps the early hours of tomorrow morning. The local forecast is telling us to expect between 10cm and 20cm more snow between now and tomorrow morning.

It is looking like tomorrow morning will start off cloudy - maybe even clear and sunny if we are lucky - but more snowfall is due back by Saturday night and might even bring us another considerable dump of snow.

The season might have started off slowly and it was around 6th January before decent dumps of snow started, but the last three weeks or so since then has really been something else. The snow walls on parts of Route 17 are now well over 2m tall, closer to 3m in some places. One small village to the north of Yuzawa near Koide officially has 350cm of snow! That's great for us, but causing problems for some locals as they try to cope with it all. Indeed there have been a fair few fatal accidents in the prefecture which of course is very sad... usually with people falling off the roof of their house as they try to take all the snow off.

So there's an impressive amount of snow now wherever you look and the snow conditions for the weekend should be brilliant. Wherever you decide to go in Yuzawa or Minamiuonuma this weekend if you are coming, you should be in for a real treat.

Have fun!
