The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here

It's a fairly cloudy start to the day in Yuzawa after a relatively mild evening, with current temperature in the town at around +4 degrees. It looks like we have rain forecast for later this morning into tonight before hopefully that turns into snow early tomorrow. It is currently also cloudy at Kagura but a good chance that it will be snowing up there later in the day.

We will update this page this evening with the latest forecast for the weekend and news on snow cover at resorts.

----

Evening update:

It has been a bit of a miserable afternoon with rain falling at town level and temperatures rising to around 9 degrees. Happily, up at Kagura it has reportedly been snowing. The forecast is for this to continue tonight and hopefully turn into snow down at town level and continue through the morning. The forecast is saying we are in for 5-10cm of new snow in the mountain regions overnight.

So how are things looking for the weekend? The spring like conditions have continued this week. The lack of fresh snowfall and continued warm temperatures have meant that both snow depths and conditions have been affected. In general, higher up the hills there are no snow cover problems. Lower down, though, the lack of snow is giving resorts a headache with most resorts having to spend time and effort moving snow around to keep their lower courses open.

-----------------

Today we have spoken to a number of resorts in the area to get the latest from them on how they are coping with the situation:

Kagura:
There are no snow cover problems up at Kagura and the resort has the best conditions in the region. There has been some snowfall up there today and hopefully more tonight and so fingers crossed for a good day up there tomorrow.

GALA Yuzawa:
There are no real snow depth problems at Gala at all, but due to possible winds tomorrow the resort will announce whether they will open or not at 6am.

NASPA Ski Garden:
The course next to the hotel and the steepest course at the resort are closed. A few patches are starting to appear on some other courses, but those courses are all fully open.

Iwappara:
There is little snow remaining on the bottom slopes of the resort, but the central part and upwards all have snow cover and are all open as normal. The resort is doing it’s best to keep the bottom course that goes down to the Gondola open by moving snow in from other areas and so for the moment the gondola is open.

Ishiuichi Maruyama:
Ishiuchi has three main entrances at the bottom of the mountain - Hatsukaishi, Chuo and Kanko - and there is currently little snow in each of those bottom areas. While it is still possible to ski to the bottom in those areas, the courses - especially at Hatsukaichi and Chuo - are very narrow. Higher up in the central and upper areas of the resort there is still good snow cover.

Joetsu Kokusai:
There is are quite large bare patches on the main gelende area just in front of the hotel and some patches are appearing in other lower runs, but there is still decent cover in other areas of the resort.

Yuzawa Now ski lift operation notes:

Most runs at resorts are open. (Please note that some parts of some lower runs at town level resorts have bare patches showing due to the lack of snow).
