Good morning from Nozawa Onsen, the town where the trees get shorter every day. It is cloudy and very cool this morning. On the top of the mountain it is snowing lightly but relatively clear. Mysteriously, 5cm of snow fell yesterday up top but snow depths remain the same. It will be a great day to go up the mountain with the weekend punters having gone back to the cities.

It is very unfortunate that I am not able to give you a first hand account of yesterdays huge powder dump, but I can't imagine it being anything other than epic. The only problem was that being a Sunday and with so little of the mountain open, it would have been tracked out very early. I did make it up in the afternoon and on piste was very choppy and even little snatches of powder hard to find. Weather ranged from silver skies and views down into the valley, to cloudy/misty with snow. Run of the day for me was a cruise down the Bunabayashi cat track. With all the snow we have had it was very picturesque.

The forecast is for light snow to continue today and tomorrow, becoming heavier at night.

I will finish today with a couple of bits of advice relevant to what has been happening in Nozawa lately. To beginners, make sure you come prepared for extreme cold. This morning it is -7 at the top of the mountain. Track pants, rain gear and your denim jacket aren't going to cut it. You need thermal underwear, warm jumpers and a good waterproof jacket and pants.

To everyone who comes here, just a word about the onsens. The onsens here are free, and part of the reason why Nozawa is such an awesome place to come. Nozawa is expecting to see a big influx of foreigners this year and already we have encountered problems with foreigners not using the onsen properly. Make sure you know how to use them and I am sure we can save a big headache. A few big don'ts are; getting soap in the bath, putting your towel in the water, being noisy, getting water on the changing area, food and drink in the bathroom, going into the wrong onsen (although I'm sure the guys won't mind if you get mixed up, ladies), going in with your shoes on or putting your shoes anywhere other than the bottom shelf of the storage case. Study up a bit before you go in and there shouldn't be a problem. Happy bathing!
