There was little to no new snow over night but we saw some during the day yesterday. For a good portion of the day we saw some heavy periods of snowfall during the day and afternoon. The snow should be good today and it's a great time to get into the backcountry a bit. The visibility is not the best, but not terrible. Touring in familiar territory and with a competent group will make the backcountry a good place to be today.

We are expecting a bit of low pressure to hold over today and the next couple days. Cloudy with intermittent snow and sometimes periods of moderate snowfall should bring us into the middle of the week.

Niseko Avalanche Report Reads:

Niseko base 6am: Coastal data: WNW10m/s at Benkei cape, 1.2m waves & 1018hPa at Kamui cape. 15cm of crystal snowfall in the past 12 hours, 40cm total in 24hours. No snowdrifts development can be observed at the base of the mountain. Yesterday’s tracks remain in the trees below 800m. Snowdrifts have slowly developed in wind-exposed area above 800m and soft 40cm slabs of drifted snow are present in leeward slopes. The snow pack is rounding, slopes are mostly stable and the general avalanche risk is moderate. However, hazards of 40cm thick surface slab avalanches are still not to be disregarded in areas within coordinate E7F7F4E4, north of D4 and around H8 area (coordinates referring to the Niseko Rules’ map). A crack/crevasse has been observed in SE of H7 area, be careful not to fall in. The snow is good, but fast. Watch your speed and watch out for trees. Better not put too much trust in the gears. Do not enter O-sawa area by ducking the rope between gate 1 and 2. Always use the gates to access out of bounds areas. Have a nice day.

Evening update:

There was a 5-10 cm snowfall in the area today. The visibility was certainly hit or miss depending on the hour. It's currently snowing the nice light fluffy stuff we all love to float on! Looks like tomorrow will be filled with more intermittent snow and a bit more wind than previous. Tomorrow would be a good chance to get out and get some of the fresh tracks that weren't quite touched in the backbowls (hint hint Annupuri). After I came down around 4pm there were still lots of fresh tracks!
