Light snow continued through the afternoon yesterday and overnight adding another 15cm. This morning though during the last hour it has started to snow heavily again adding around another 5cm. The wind has eased a little and so has the avalanche danger. Today they are expecting to open gates 1 (Annupuri bowl), 4 (access to Fujiwara no sawa bowl) and 6 (Moiwa peak gate). Gate 4 accesses some great terrain that has yet to be skied this season and will currently offer some really deep powder. Be extra cautious though if trying to traverse all the way to Higashi one and it's probably best to stay away from the cornice at this stage. I would only advise those with avi knowledge and gear to head right out into Fujiwara no sawa at this stage. Otherwise drop down the bowl to the right just as you get through the gate and follow it down skiers left of the Hanazono #3 lift. Should be another epic day out there and it appears there's many more to come with snowfalls set to continue for awhile yet.

Avalanche Information:

ountain base 6am: -8℃, 15cm of new snowfall and no snowdrifts development. Coastal data: NW15m/s at Benkei cape, NNE3m/s, 1007hPa and 1.5m waves at Kamui cape. Forecasted wind at the peak at noon: NW18m/s. The snow has simmered down in western Shakotan peninsula today. Snowdrifts are settling below 800m and the snowpack is slowly stabilizing. However, a thick surface slab avalanche from Dec 31st layer is still to be highly considered in leeward areas above 950m, namely skiers-right slope of Annupuri Osawa, Backbowl sidewalls and cornice area in Higashi-One. Better not stimulate those slopes at anytime. Gate 1 (L-ji), 4 (Fujiwara) and 6 (Moiwa) is scheduled to open around noon. Follow the ski-patrol’s instructions. Do not ride or rest in the valley bottom, avalanches follow it. It is also wiser to stay away from cornices and knolls or to traverse/cut across a steep slope today as it could trigger a slide. The avalanche risk is highest during a storm, and remains high a while after it calmed down. Out of bounds riding is being tolerated only if the Niseko Rules is being respected. Have a nice day.
