Some light snow overnight and this morning has deposited 5-10cm of snow around the mountain. Not exactly face shot stuff but it's certainly better than nothing. The light snow showers can be expected to continue throughout much of the day and this evening.
Breaks in the weather and cloud can be expected from time to time and the peak is open. Time it right and you can get some amazing views from the top right down to the Sea of Japan and of course across to Mt Youtei. Even if you're not up to hitting some of the back bowls a climb to the peak can be very worthwhile just for the view. You can come back down the way you walked up very easily and safely if you can handle black runs easy enough. Rug up though as it can be very cold and windy at the peak even if it's relatively mild and calm elsewhere.
Everything is still looking good for some big snowfalls to come through next week so enjoy the views whilst they're here!

Avalanche Information:

Niseko Avalanche Info No.25

Moiwa base 6am: -5℃ and 5cm of fresh uniform crystal snow, not influenced by the wind.
Coastal wind: Benkei cape 15m/s WNW, Kamui cape 1.8m waves and 1010hp.
Annupuri peak wind: 6.9m/s SSW at 6am, predicted to pick up to 18m/s at noon.
Hirafu patrol reported strong gusts (15m/s SW) along the peak ridge with 30cm of newly formed snowdrifts.
The wind in upper Mizuno no sawa is blowing at 15m/s NW with no snow deposit.
According to snowfall transition, snow pit observations and data analysis, the developments of snowdrifts are small and the avalanche hazard is LOW.
Avalanches are mostly occurring in steep slopes with a sudden and large snow deposit, developed due to storms.
A 50cm thick naturally triggered surface slab avalanche has occurred in “Mikaeri no.2 gulley” during heavy wind on the day before yesterday.
Avalanche risk will rise again once the next storm comes in. The next predicted trigger layer is Jan 8th.
The snow condition is better than yesterday.
Peak gates will open at 9:00am.
Do not duck rope to step out of bounds. Beware of sudden weather changes, the mountain condition is ever changing. Ask the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out the gates.
