Good morning from Niseko and... did you get to enjoy the day yesterday? Great weather to be out in, though perhaps not the kindest to snow conditions. Sun-baked I believe is the word.

I'm afraid that today I have unfortunately have to add 0cm into the report with no new cm of snowfall... just a dusting.

It is definitely feeling considerably milder this morning but light snow has been falling this morning (hence the dusting) with snow forecast to be falling through the day today and tomorrow. So I should have news of a fresh layer in my report tomorrow. Let's see how much Nature decides to send us this time.

You may have noticed that towards the end of the week and Saturday lots of Japan will be experiencing warmer conditions. There's a chance of some rain on Saturday, even here, according to some forecasts. Some attractive but hopefully wrong weather people were on the telly throwing about the word 'spring' (not when talking about Hokkaido I might add), which should of course be banned along with 'rain'. Until April.

But don't worry, it will surely (hopefully) just be a blip for us up here.

Back to today and poor visibility is preventing top lifts from opening early morning - hopefully that will improve but there also a good chance of strong winds causing lift issues today.

---

Please note that some of the reports on SnowJapan may be posted later than usual tomorrow morning.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 5am: -1℃, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -2℃, E10m/s, no snowfall but development of snowdrifts. Mikaeri 740m: -4.4℃, NE7.6m/s. Annupuri 1150m, Hirafu Peak Ridge: data n/a. Benkei cape: S4m/s, Kamui cape: E3m/s, 1002hPa, 0.7m waves.

An easterly wind is picking up above 800m elevation as a new low-pressure system is approaching, making snowdrifts develop on top of the Feb 8th sun-baked face of the west-facing slopes. Warm air is also flowing along with the wind, unexpected avalanches are to be considered in slopes above 800m. Newly formed cornices are especially unstable. The snow & wind is likely to pick up as the Low moves east, better pay attention to the weather when going out touring. Gates opening is yet to be decided due to heavy winds, please respect the patrol’s decisions.

There have been 2 avalanches reported yesterday. Both caused by collapsing cornices. No human casualties. Stay away of cornices and don’t ski-cut carelessly. People below wouldn’t escape it. Patrollers will be doing some research in Yu no Sawa today, stay away from there or get busted and have your pass confiscated. Icy roads this morning, drive safe.
