Good morning from Niseko.

It is an overcast kind of start but bright. There's no fresh snowfall to report this morning.

Snow is due to be back falling soon though, so.. hurray!

Yes hopefully by the end of today, or at least by the time that I post my next report, it'll be snowing. It's still going to be mild during the day today though and it may well start as rain before turning into snow.

Let us see.

Snowfall is on the forecast on and off through into the weekend once it gets started. Anyone's guess how much, though I wouldn't expect anything major - keep expectations on the lower side just in case. But let's hope that we might be able to get a decent amount to give the slopes a good freshening up. And a return to colder conditions will be most welcome.

It's probably a mix of the conditions and the fact that we are into March now but things suddenly seem to generally feel a good deal quieter. Just one example that I have discussed before in these reports - even at 8:25am, just before it opens, there's hardly anyone lined up for the Ace Number 2 quad at Niseko Grand Hirafu.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6.00am: 0°C, no new snow, frozen snow surface. Moiwa 838m: -0.7°C, SW0.5m/s. Annupuri 1000m: snowpack 295cm. Hirafu Ridgeline: -3°C, frozen snow surface, fog, bad visibility. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:light winds. Kamui Cape SSW2m/s, 1013hPa, wave 0.8m.

A shallow pressure gradient preceding the coming low pressure system is giving calm weather at the sea and in the mountains. A cold wind has blown overnight and the mountain is covered with frozen tracks from previous days, making us lose interest in riding. The mountain is moving toward spring conditions with alternating warm and cold air moving through, often making foggy conditions and the snow difficult to ride. Also the frozen snow surface is hard to groom, so there are lots of ice potatoes left on the runs. Take care of hitting ice lumps both on and of the runs All peak gates are expected to open, however be very careful riding out of bounds. Falling into a crack can be a fatal accident. In the afternoon winds and the temperature are expected to rise. Make plans to suit the conditions.
