Well we didn't get much out of yesterday (in terms of fresh snowfall) in the end, but I said not to worry didn't I, because it was coming today? So here's what is happening this morning...

No new cm of snow to report here at base, though I'm hearing that there may have been some very slight dustings higher up. I feel like I'm scraping around reporting that though!

The day has started off cloudy, mild (+1C), and with strong winds affecting upper lifts of all of the resorts on the mountain - the situation as of 8:30am is noted below.

Some forecasts even have a bit of rain in town forecast along with the mild conditions during the day today... but I am happy to report that snow has started falling here near Hanazono base where I am posting this report from this morning. It is mild though still so let's hope the snow can continue. We might have to wait until tonight for temperatures to really drop though.

Things ARE looking very good for some Niseko-like sustained snowfall, with that starting from today and continuing through the coming week. (Honest!) I say bring it on.

Do be sure to check out the Avalanche Report below.

Unfortunately the wind conditions prevented Niseko Village from running their early morning Gondola this morning. As far as I know that's the end of that particular service for this season. It sounds way too early to be saying something like that doesn't it. Just checking... yes, we do actually have (almost) 3 full months of lift operations left to go!

---

I really enjoyed checking out the Sapporo Snow Festival - very interesting. Those sculptures really are very impressive indeed. Otsukaresama, snow sculptors!

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: 0C, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: E10m/s, -5C, no snowfall, 30-50cm of wind-blown snowdrifts. Annupuri 1000m snowpack 280cm. Hirafu 1000m Peak 1308m: SSE26.8m/s, -6.2C. Coastal data: Benkei cape WSW5m/s, Kamui cape S8m/s, 1008hPa, 1.2m waves.

Strong SE wind is blowing above 800m due to approaching low-pressure system. There are no snowfall, however the strong wind is drifting snow and drastically developing snowdrifts in leeward slopes. The cornices around 800m altitude are extremely unstable and would collapse with the slightest stimulation. The general avalanche risk is still low, however will change with the future snowfall transition. Peak gates will be kept closed today. Many of the accidents happen during poor weather.

The light is weak and the surface is hard to see. Beware of falling head-first into cracks. Once the warm air inflow passes, a strong north-westerly storm is forecasted to pick up which will rise the avalanche hazard drastically. Adjust your touring plans with the weather. This information is published in hope to protect the safety of all Niseko locals and visitors.

A BCA beacon checker has been installed at Moiwa gate no.6. Carrying an avalanche beacon is not mandatory but is seriously recommended.
