The latest Niseko Now report can be found here

Good morning everyone.

Yesterday was not the most impressive way to start the New Year, weather-wise. All a bit wet come the afternoon. The folk with hangovers, clutching for straw-like excuses for not having to get up, sort of had their good excuse! Having said that, it was busy out there on the slopes and I am sure people were having their fun. Remember, unless you live in Marketing Brochure Land, it can't be 'amazing conditions' all the time.

I am not able to add any new cm to my report this morning though I notice the Avalanche Report is mentioning new (wet) snow on the mountain.

Earlier on, pre-toast, it was kind of wet sleet-y snow coming down, but things seem to have improved with snow currently falling outside with a slight dusting of snow on the top of my car now. It's not the light and fluffy variety, but it is certainly better than rain.

So when do we get back to fresh light and fluffy? That will be tomorrow hopefully. And hopefully more to fall than is on the forecast. I know, I'm greedy.

I plan to post my season recap in the report tomorrow morning.

O-tanoshimi-ni!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6.00am: 0°, 5cm wet new snow. Moiwa 800m : -1.6°, NE2.6m/s, 10cm new snow, easterly large snowdrift development yesterday afternoon. Annupuri 1150m: -4°, SE10m/s, 5cm new snow. Hirafu 1250m: -5°, E10m/s, 10cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:WSW4m/s. Kamui Cape: E4m/s, 1005hPa, wave 0.7m.

Mixed snow and rain falling at the mountain base, the mountain is covered in wet snow and trees look beautiful. The low pressure system has remained near Shakotan. Above 800m there is E10m/s winds and snow, with slow snowdrift development covering old tracks. From test and observation, avalanche risk is low below 1000m. However in lower Kozan no Sawa and SE facing steep slopes like West Ridge there is risk of flow type avalanche, particular to this type of low pressure snow. Take care. Around 600m under lift lines and in steep cliff areas, full depth avalanches from cracks starting to open can easily occur. If there is a lot of snow a full depth avalanche will occur even in the middle of winter. Dont stand around under these slopes.

Peak gates are expected to be open. However may close due to bad weather or bad visibility. Listen to patrol and plan ahead. Never enter Haru no Taki. The risk of avalanche from the surface layers and also from deeper layers persists. Do not disregard the danger.

Niseko Rules respects your freedom to ride safely. Respect for Rules. Snow is not too bad. Have a good day. Winter will begin its return tomorrow, the temperature will drop and the snow will be back.
