Good morning.

While the lower lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Niseko Hanazono remained open yesterday, Niseko Annupuri remained closed for the day (as far as I can tell) and didn’t open for nighta either. The top lift at Hanazono also sat out the day. I only caught a few glances during the day but from what I saw it was busy out there... so much for idea that lots of people might decide to give it a rest for the day! Anyway, I hope that the people braving the conditions found their (safe) fun.

The strong winds of the last few days have eased off and there's fine blue skies over the region. Happily it is much calmer this morning.

There's no fresh snowfall to report to you this morning from here at base, though after the mad weather we have experienced it will be interesting to see how that has affected the snow. Please see the Avalanche Report below for more on that kind of thing.

We could certainly do with some mountain-wide 'Niseko-like' fresh snow, but it should otherwise be a very fine Sunday to be out and on the slopes.

Take care out there.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -6℃, no snowfall. Moiwa800m: -9.2℃, WNW5m/s, large development of snowdrifts. Annupuri 1150m: -12℃, W12m/s, 150cm snowdrifts. Hirafu 1250m: -13℃, WNW10m/s, no snowfall. Kamui cape lighthouse: WNW7m/s, 1022hPa, 2.3m waves.

The isobars spread out and the wind started to calm down from pre-dawn. The are no new snowfall, however the wind-drifts made cornices and snowdrifts develop drastically in leeward slopes. The density of those newly formed snowdrifts around 800m elevation is starting to equalize and the avalanche risk is lowering, however it will remain high in 1000m leeward steep slopes, and 60cm surface slab avalanche from Jan 27th layer are to be highly expected.

Falling cornices and/or riding stimulation can trigger a slide anytime. Do not traverse knolls and steep slopes. The snow is dense with some ripples due to wind motion. Tricky conditions, but the snow is not bad in the trees. Gates are expected to open after 10:30. Please listen to the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out the gates. Accidents are most likely to occur during and just after storms. Hoping today will end safely.
