Good morning from Niseko, and it's a bit of a wild one!

Very strong winds are blowing around this morning and while it is snowing it's not hitting the ground, as it were and just seemingly blowing around as well as anything else that isn't properly attached. Niseko Village this morning reporting wind speeds of up to 23m/s on their upper areas.

Such a contrast to the lovely calm day that we enjoyed yesterday as well!

I am about to do my checking but I doubt that there'll be much - if any - lift activity today on the mountain. At the start of the day it looks like just the lower Ace Family lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu and the Banzai and Community Chair lifts at Niseko Village are starting the day. There's no guarantee they'll make it through the day either.

The strong winds - and snowfall - are expected to continue today and probably tomorrow as well, with things calming down and getting back to something like normal hopefully from Wednesday.

---

With 0cm of snow added to the report this morning that means that my total observed snowfall for February 2016 is going to stand at 266cm; 70cm more than I observed last February.

Give me a day or two to put together some more numbers and comments on all that lot!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -5℃, low-pressure snowfall 10cm, wind picking up from 4am. Moiwa 838m: SE25m/s, -7℃. Benkei cape SSE18m/s, Kamui cape ENE10m/s, 1009hPa, Wave height unknown. Annupuri 1000m snowpack 275cm, 1150m wind S25m/s, large development of snowdrift, -6℃. Hirafu peak ridge: -6℃, S20m/s, heavy storm.

A storm is developing as a low-pressure approaches, heavy SE wind is blowing above 600m elevation. Snowdrifts are developing fast at the base of the mountain. Slabs are drastically forming in unusual aspects and avalanche risk will raise intensely.

Accidents hardly occur in fair weather. About 1000 people went out of the gates yesterday, but there was no report of avalanches or injuries. Gates will be kept closed today, however it is one of those days when accidents occur in surrounding mountains. Never underestimate the hazards and always be prudent. Better keep it easy today, stick in the trees. White out conditions on the road too, please be careful driving. The mountain condition will turn better in the next few days. We hope everyone stays safe under this storm.
