Another 30cm of fresh snow to report this morning from Niseko and another extremely cold morning. -10C out there... actually slightly colder than it was earlier on!

The snow started falling in style in the evening yesterday and it is still coming down now though has been easing off. Wind, cold and poor visibility do not make this the friendliest of days conditions-wise, but the snow should be very fine. Just take care out there.

The wind blowing about on the mountain is affecting resort operations on the mountain this morning with all of the resorts reporting that their top lifts are not operating early on.

Similar weather conditions forecast for tomorrow as well before the snow perhaps easing up Friday and then a relatively mild weekend.

Just one point I'd like to explain that someone asked us about. The 'official snow depth' numbers shown in the table above and information below are the snow depth numbers coming from the resort. It doesn't necessarily mean that when we have 30cm of snow fall here overnight that those official numbers will jump by the same 30cm. More often than not they won't for a number of reasons (snow gets compacted, melts, etc.) The 'new snowfall' that I am reporting is the new snowfall observed in the village to give you an idea of how much snow has actually fallen.

Avalanche Information:

Niseko base 6am: -6C, 25cm of mixed broken-crystal/graupel snow and moderate development of snowdrifts. Moiwa 800m: WNW15m/s, -10C. Annupuri peak wind forecast: NW20m/s. Coastal data: NW20m/s, 3.7m waves and 1011hPa at 5:25am.

The wind & snow picked up from 5pm yesterday and made cornices/snowdrifts (up to 80-120cm) develop in leeward slopes above 800m. Heavy snowfall combined with strong wind is resulting in drastic accumulation of unstable snowdrifts. These newly formed slabs are very unstable; the avalanche risk is very high. Predicted sliding layer is Dec 25th pre-low pressure system snowfall.

Gates 1, 4 & 6 will be closed. Many of the winter sports accidents occur in bad weather. Think safety no.1 priority, not the holiday plans. The snow in the trees has been reset and, although little heavy, is in good condition. Always be well prepared of the consequences of out of bounds riding. Beware of slides especially in knolls, cornices and open steep slopes. Ride one by one, not all together at once and do not gather up at the bottom of the valleys.
