Good morning from Niseko and what a beautiful morning it is.

Not in terms of fresh snowfall - there's none of that to report this morning - but just look at those blue skies!

And that funny looking cloud hat thingy that Mt Yotei is wearing. If I didn't respect her so much, I'd say she looked a bit silly.

But other than the Mt Yotei peak cloud there's not much other cloud up there just at the moment. Rather we have lots of clear blue skies and the sun shining down on us. Happily none of those gusty winds that we have endured the past few days as well.

It's a very cold morning as well, -9 degrees here at the moment. That's not stopping lots of eager folk wanting to get up for first tracks of the day though; and who can blame them.

All the resorts are open as planned this morning and all of the gates should be open as well. I would expect quite a lot of people using them.

The forecast tell us to expect to be back to snowfall from tomorrow and into next week, though it looks like it will be more steady regular light snowfall than serious dumpage.

---

As people who visited just after New Year will no doubt tell you, Niseko does not usually get that many clear bluebird days in peak season. They should be - and I am sure are by most - treasured. (Just as long as they are followed quickly by a fresh delivery of more snowfall, of course). I certainly love them and I'm going to be doing some exploring myself.

There hasn't been as much fresh over the last few days of course and the strong winds that we have been experiencing as well will have been blowing snow around and making shapes. Visibility is excellent today but as always do keep check on the excitement levels and be sure of where you are going, especially if you are venturing out of the resort areas. Have fun!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6.00am: -4°C, no new snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m: -7°C, W5m/s, trace of new snow. Mikaeri 740m: -8.7°C, NW3.5m/s, 10cm new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -13°C, light winds, no snowdrift development. Hirafu 1000m: -8°C, light winds, trace of new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:SE3m/s. Kamui Cape NNW8m/s, 1014hPa, wave 2.2m.

The atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow and there has been no significant snowdrift development overnight. From observation and data general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are scheduled to be open this morning. Please listen to the patrols guidance before you go out of bounds. Beware traversing cornice slopes and knoll terrain – this can trigger an avalanche. Today back country areas will be busy, carelessly triggering an avalanche could cause a deadly situation for other mountain users below. Don't wait in the valley bottoms, avalanches come from above.

Stay safe by not over estimating your skills or equipment. Don't carelessly follow tracks, you may get lost, always be aware of your current location. There is no bus service back from Goshiki Onsen
