Good morning from Niseko.

And it was a nice morning yesterday with the fine weather continuing for most of the day.

It feels cold this morning - and indeed it is. Temperatures were down to around -11C last night and it's a chilly -5C now.

There is just a slight dusting of snow down here to report, so no new cm.

There was more cloud around when I got up this morning but right now there has been increasingly blue skies over the region and the sun is shining down through my window. It is a fine start to the day... having said all that, the forecast says cloud so the blue skies might not last long.

Windy conditions are affecting the top lifts at the start of the day (though it doesn't feel particularly windy down here at base right now).

The snow on the forecast is still there, starting tomorrow and going through until perhaps around mid-week. Keep an eye on that.

Chinese New Year is now fast approaching with lots of people coming to Niseko to celebrate. It's all very peak-season-y. Here's to the weather also being so.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -6℃, no snowfall. Moiwa800m:-8℃, E8m/s, slight snowfall and snowdrift development. Annupuri1150m: No data. Hirafu1250m: -13℃, NE10m/s, slight snowfall and snowdrift development. Kamui cape lighthouse: E2m/s, 1017hPa, 1.4m waves.

The barometric pressure gradient is small as a high pressure zone is hovering above Niseko area. The weather is calm however a moderate easterly wind is blowing in higher altitude. No snowfall and snowdrift development is minimal. The general avalanche risk is low. All gates are scheduled to open as soon as they’re ready to.

The snowpack is small in the out of bounds area. Stay under controllable speed and beware of hitting trees. There were 2 accidents in Osawa and Backbowl yesterday. The sooner the better for calling for rescue.

10 people skied into strictly off-limits Yu no sawa, 9 of them got caught by the Niseko Village patrols and got their lift pass confiscated. Niseko United and Moiwa resort are taking severe measure towards violators that intentionally break the Rules. It is a vicious disrespect to many people who are holding off from riding off-limits areas and respecting and trusting in the Rules. The Niseko Rules applies to everybody here, no matter his or her nationality or experience in the snow. It is a mistake if anybody is thinking that there’s no need to follow rules set by Japanese. Selling lift tickets to groups that obviously disregard the Rules is also playing a role to decay the image of the Niseko Rules.

The snow quality stays good, have a nice day.
