It will be hard, but not impossible, to find new snow today. North facing aspects will be the ones with the deepest and freshest snow. Most of the resort is pretty well tracked out and the snow is stable. It's an awesome day to get out into the backcountry and sidecountry if you have the gear.

Today is looking to be cloudy and calm weather wise; not too cold either. Monday and Tuesday are expected to get the heavier snowfall, but the amount isn't looking much more than 20-30 cm. It is important to remember that this could change abruptly and snowfall could increase. With a maritime and dry-air climate like this one, anything can happen rather quickly.

There will also be a lot of events going on for the Chinese New Year. The town of Hirafu may be a bit more crowded than normal with more to do. This is a busy weekend/week and you can avoid it or embrace it...whichever you choose! I hope everyone has an awesome day and gets out to find the secret stashes of pow.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu / Hanazono:
Top - 320cm
Bottom - 170cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 330cm
Bottom - 200cm

Annupuri:
Top - 335cm
Bottom - 200cm

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -7℃, no snowfall.
Coastal data: SE5m/s at Benkei cape, 0.5m waves and 1024hPa at Kamui cape.
Snowfall transition: No new snow for 48 hours. Surface hoar is forming on the snow surface due to the sun exposure and temperature change. Its thickness depends on the slope orientation and elevation. This layer formed between Jan 17th and 21st is seen to form a notable hoar layer underneath the next low-pressure system snowfall.
Hazard evaluation: Today’s general avalanche risk is low. Slopes with crusty surface may be tricky to ski. Wind-blown/hard-packed surface can also be found in areas around 1000m altitude and small-scale slab slides are also to be expected in steep slopes. Potentially dangerous if caught in the slide.
Gates opening: Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30.
Caution: Do not enter strictly off-limits areas to seek fresh lines; Haru no taki area (coordinate G3) and Yu no sawa area (K4) is closed at all times. New snow is coming shortly.
