Hello and good morning from Hirafu and.... it's more fine amd mild weather this morning.

Fine as in blue sky, with some thin wispy cloud in places. Actually it feels slightly colder this morning, but still generally the mild conditions are persisting.

We're going to have to put up with a few more days of that before getting back to colder conditions, and shouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of rain as well tomorrow.

(Sorry... I probably like writing it even less than you like reading it!)

All resorts planning to be open as normal this morning and gates too.

Take care and have fun; and see you tomorrow.

What I posted yesterday:

Interested in the observed snow depth I report on here and indeed the other reports on SnowJapan? Please go take a look at their new page that brings together all the existing data from the reports:

Observed snowfall tables & graphs

Just a week ago or so when I was checking it, Niseko was looking good and pretty with lots of fresh but it's down there looking a bit dry just now with the lack of fresh over the last week ... the table is sorted on the 'Last 7 days' snowfall.

Oh dear!

But that's part of the fun of it. You'll be able to see where the snow is falling in the last week, and also get a general idea of how the season is shaping up in different areas. Obviously not much here in Hokkaido right now compared with other areas.

And you can compare directly with the data from previous seasons.

Do remember to read the page marked VERY IMPORTANT, as it is... very important. The data isn't meant to be a scientific study, it's snow here at base rather than upper elevations, some places get more up there than others, different humans posting each report... all sorts of variables involved. But still, it makes for a very interesting read.

You'll see that I have recorded 957cm of snowfall so far here at base in Hirafu. Myoko and Yuzawa in Niigata Prefecture have recorded 13.5m and 12m respectively - so far! - and you'll also see how all those number compare with their previous seasons as well. While Niseko is currently a bit under what we had at the end of February last year, Niigata seems to have been delivered a great deal more snow than last season.

It's also interesting to see how this season December generally beat out January for snowfall. It was the other way round last season.

Anyway do take a look, it's one of those pages to bookmark and go back to every day! It will be linked from here soon.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: -5C, no new snowfall. Moiwa 800m: light winds -7C, no new snowfall. Annupuri 1000m: snowpack 300cm. Hirafu 1000m: light winds, -7C, no new snowfall. Annupuri peak 1308m: N6.1m/s, -9.6C. Cape Benkei Lighthouse: ENE3m/s, Cape Kamui: WSW2m/s, 0.8m waves and 1026hPa.

Currently we are under the influence of high pressure system, the sea and mountains are calm. There has been no new snowdrift development and the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Avoid the path of a sudden avalanche - don't ride in the valley bottoms. The mountain is in hard condition, take care loosing control, falling, falling into cracks.

There is the possibility of a full depth avalanche on the west ridge (coordinates E7). Take care traversing from Annupuri peak to Goshiki Onsen, if an avalanche occurs it can easily reach the road at the valley bottom. The BCA Beacon Checker will be installed at Hirafu Gate 3 today. Carrying a beacon is not mandatory but still recommended. If you are carrying a beacon it can not only help you, you may be able to help someone else as well. Don't duck ropes searching for fresh tracks. Please respect and follow the Niseko Rules.
