I thought we might have had a small "break" in December's powder assault but alas we wake up to 10cms observed on our cleared vehicles. Tuesday actually saw a few clear breaks in the morning but by the late moring we were experiencing several snow showers. I'm guessing an additional 5-10cms fell during the day judging from the parking lot that had to be cleared a second time around 6pm.

Niseko is being sold as "the powder capital". While making this kind of claim can be a dangerous game, this December Niseko has more that lived up to it's reputation. Not only is Niseko kicking some serious butt in terms of accummulation but the consistency and quality has been second to none. This to me, is what makes Niseko stands out from the other big powder resorts of the world, the consistent (snow clearers might use the word relentless) snowfall. It truely feels like it has been "the best day of the season" for 19 days straight!

Get out there today as the next few days are expecting blizzard like conditions and a 70-80% chance of snow...

All gates except the peak gates are scheduled to open. Great day to head out to some great longer runs. That said, if there were ever a time to hit strawberries, the time is now. The features are still big and the powder untracked.

Official measurements at Hirafu 160cms at the base, 275cms at the peak

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 275
Bottom - 160

Niseko Village:
Top - 210
Bottom - 150

Top - 210

The Niseko "Avalanche report" reads:

Niseko base: -6℃, 25cm of crystal snow in the past 12 hours. Coastal data: W5m/s wind at Benkei cape, 0.7m waves at Kamui cape. A high-pressure system is flowing in and the wind is relatively calm above 1000m. Snowdrifts and cornices are still slowly developing, however formation of slabs is minor except around the peak. Gate no. 4 Fujiwara & 5 Hanazono are scheduled to open today at 9:30am. Seek for the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out of bounds. Avalanche hazard (up to 100cm thick) will raise in Haru no taki strictly off limits area (below 800m) due to sun-effect, which will induce formation of thick slabs. Do not even consider dropping into those areas. Otherwise, the snow is in great shape, however caution is still required as bushes and logs are still lurking shallow underneath the surface. Gate no.6 Moiwa is scheduled to open at 9:30am. Strongly recommend snowboarders to carry poles and snowshoes as the snow is deep and may not be possible to ride out without unstrapping the board. Keep in mind that outside the gates is not the resort anymore. Have a nice day
